Thought I would start a new thread as this is a new problem.
As you are aware, snapped a glow plug off, took head off and removed the broken one.
Fitted new HG and rebuilt, after allot of arsing about priming the fuel system got it started.
Since then I thought i had a problem with air getting into the fuel lines over night.
Yesterday i spent 2-3 hours going through all fuel connections and lines.
Fuel sender unit, sedimentor, all pipes, injector pipes, spill pipes, tightened everywhere up and if i was unsure i smeared some silison sealer.
I am 99% confident there is no where for air to get in.

Came to it this morning, tried to turn it over........10-15 turns and battery is dead!!!!!!! which is brand new. put the jump leads on for 2 minutes with my mrs car running and it starts pretty much straight off.......
Then it starts 1st turn for the rest of the day.....

I am totally lost as what to try next?... alternator? starter motor?... ant other suggestions please....

sounds like a bad earth from your battery to me mate , have you checked all your earths lately ?
when you use jump leads you put the neg lead straight onto the block which bypasses the battery to engine/chassis earth so it should start , next time you try to start under its own power and it doesn't start , put one jump lead on from battery negative to engine block and try again , if this works it will prove your battery neg to earth is fubar
hope this helps

It's not a 200tdi by any chance?

checke and re done the earth directly behind the battery, just cleaned and re connected the cables going to the alternator and the starter motor earth strap.
Where are the other main earth points?

My 300TDi had similar starting issues requiring a lot of turning over before starting. Once going, it was fine all day. Turned out the lift pump was on it's way. Replaced and it starts after a couple of turns now.

If it's still a slow starter once your electrical problem is sorted then maybe look at that?

the lift pump was the 1st thing i changed its only around 6 weeks old mate.

I have re done all the earth points i can find and double checked all fuel lines and connections again haha.

Fingers crossed for in the morning.

started yesterday morning after 4-5 turns, came to it this morning, same problem again, turned over at a good speed and tried to fire a couple of times but didnt, after around 20-30 turns battery was giving up the ghost.
Jump started it and it fire straight away !!!!

I have fitted a new battery
New glow plugs
New earth from engine to battery -ve
new injector spill pipes and checked all fuel connections so 100% sure it not a air leak.

As it tried to fire a couple of times I am thinking it could be valve clearances not set correctly as the only thing i havnt checked is compression... any other ideas guys?

Just out of interest, Where exactly on the car are you connecting the jump leads? For some reason it seems to make a difference.

try connecting a jump lead from the battery negative to the engine block next time you try to start it. There is another earth down by the starter motor that could be causing your problem

I have already ran a large cable from the battery -ve to the engine which is permantly installed.
I have removed, filed and cleaned the earth strap on the starter motor.
When it does fire up after jump startin there is a hell of a lot of white smoke (diesel) from the zorst, and then for about 1-2 minutes it runs lumpy and puffs white smoke.
Cant think what else it could be other than the valve clearances. Or maybe worth stripping the starter and alternator off and havin them checked out at an auto electrician.... any other ideas please im gettin fed up now.... :(

just a thought but just because the battery is new doesn't mean its a good one occasionally you do get dodgy new ones , i used to work for a national automotive shop & a motorfactors & both had a small percentage of returns so there is a reasonable chance it could be that , dont discount the obvious

I did think that but it does turn the engine over a decent enough speed it just doesnt fire which points me towards valves / compression.
Do you think its worth a phone call to the supplier of the battery in the morning?

well it may be , only thinking as it shows almost the same symptoms as my 200tdi it would be an ablsolute pig to start of a morning even with a jump pack but once it fired up was fine all day (fired up really well from my daughters car with jump leads) pretty much untill the next morning when it was like back to step 1 , finally got tired of running round in diagnostic circles and spent 50quid on a new battery its been fine since.

that it pretty much the same problems i am having mate.
I will give the supplier a call in the morning as it has a 2 year warranty and is only a week old.
I will also do the valve clearances while im on as it aint gonna cost a penny just some time.
Just want it sorted now haha

My bet is on the battery. These engines need a really good cranking speed to fire up but they should start straight away. The white smoke is accumulated fuel from the engine being cranked without starting. You might also want to check that you have power at the glowplugs but tdi's usually fire up without much help from them. Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals you should have a bit over 12 volts without the engine running and around 14 when it is running. Have you made sure the alternator belt is nice and tight?

hello my mate had same prob whith his auto 300 it was his starter motor change that all is fine now

got a new battery, was the same problem, re-set valve clearances, same problem.

Thought i would remove starter motor and get it checked out. remove power cable and small spade connector.
I could not get the rear 13mm nut undone, what should i use to get it off? when i realised i couldnt get it off i cleaned both power and spade connector, put it back together as i was fed up and i smashed my knuckles trying to get it off.
Decided to give it a turn of the key for good luck..... started bloody first time!!

Ran all day yesterday, started first turn this morning :):):):):)

Payday I will try again to get it off and have it refurbed.

Fingers crossed i have finally bottomed out the problem, sods law its the last thing i checked!!!

Big thanks to Discomania, biglad, bigjohn and the other posters.

Mike
