The 2.5 BMW developes maxium torque at 2500 rpm, the auto's torque converter locks up at around 50 mph. Could it be your torque converters not unlocking stopping the gearbox from changing down the gears?

Towing a caravan or something heavy???

when im towing my 97 dse auto struggles at about 47 up slight hills any ideas or is that just any dse for you

Mine is chipped and will maintain 60mph up most hills with a caravan on tow unless they are really steep. Sometimes I have to force a down shift to 3rd manually and hold it in 3rd as recomended in the handbook to stop it up shifting, loosing speed, then downshifting again continuously.

my caravan is a big one weighs about 1850kg, its as if it want to change up a gear but just cant and sound like the nads are getting thrashed off it

i sometimes have probs with caravan wheels... most cases i strip em down clean em and grease the bearings while im at it, jack the van up and rotate the wheels any binding get em cleaned/serviced

From time to time I tow 2.5 tonnes or more with my excavator on it's trailer no problem, it goes up the hill from my house with plenty of revs pretty quick, much quicker than my Transit with the same load.:D:D:D
