hi all, i have a p38 diesel and i,m thinking of swapping the engine for something with low end torque, non turbo, i,m also intending to lose the transfer box as i,m only ever likely to use 2 wd anyhow,
does anyone have any suggestions which engine and box combination to use for the best?? dont mind manual or auto although its manual at the moment, also something 2.7 upwards and not too expensive, i,m also selling the current eng/box now, and some other bits off this project, air ecu, becm, air bags, all advice appreciated cheers :)

A diesel with no turbo:eek: sounds like you need a lump from one of those builders dump trucks, 3 cylinders no turbo, no electronics no power:rolleyes:. Even caterpiller use turbo diesels LOL

what i need is an engine that can pull like a train, go out in the rain without breaking down, and a vehicle that doesnt lock me out if i park in the wrong place or i dont use it for a week!!

what i dont need is smart answers!!

if you cant help me please dont waste my time!!!!!

Maybe if you suggested doing something sensible you would get some decent answers, removing all you suggest from an LP means you will have to start from a pair of axles, chassis and body.Basic functions like braking, heater controls, windows, wipers etc all were set up to run off the various ecu's around the car.If you dont like it like that the best thing to do is to sell it and buy a tax exempt series LR and fit a 200TDI in it.

At the start of this thread I was trying to think about some older conversions done on Classic RRs that might have been possible here, but since your above snippy posting I don't think I'll bother. Maybe best you log on to some other forum & take your crappy attitude with you.

amen to that:D

It always amuses me when a poster gets put out at either the lack of response or the nature of response.

Eightinavee has this right. You've got to go back to the straight sixes in old landcruisers and Patrols to find an engine like you're talking about. Think about it, the old 2.3 Sierras and diesels of that era were gutless lumps. Modern engines are far more efficient and you get a lot more torque higher up the rev range. The new 2.4 transit engine in the defender is supposed to be virtually un-stallable.

The reallity is that with the changes you are suggesting and you want a torquey reliable jeep you should probably just buy a landcruiser and sell your toolkit.

Range Rovers are not a vehicle where you keep putting the key in and go, they are a bit like a woman, give them no attension and they throw a wobbly but look after them and there is nothing that cam match them for comfort

I C WERE DEALING WITH AN OLD POST HERE ! . but i must have a little say im running a 1998 p38 with nissan sd33t straight six in the front end. i donated the whole wireing system to the local tips.started again back to relays and fuses. shes returning 35mpg pulls like a train. took alot of work but it was worth it

I've often taken chances on changing cars, like, just before boarding the ferry to France to go on hols (June '12) stopped the night in CHARING, Kent.Told wife that we had a couple of hours to spare so looked in at local petrol station forecourt,(not intending to buy anything), However swapped my '98 Subaru Forester (Fully loaded) for a '96 N858TAX labeled P38 2.5DSE Rovy.I was assured by the car sales man it would get me to Switzerland and back !! (I'm nuts), 180K on the clock!!! WELL it did!! No problem. Home in Cardiff, I've since given it a full service, two new tyres, a chip, and a K&N. My wife loves it and reads the manual cover to cover ??!!
It's not as fast as the Subaru, BUT it is very fast and commands respect in traffic, very useful. Consumption is 22mpg around town and easily 34mpg on a run. Only thing so far is mysteries of the Heavac. "Lovely motor guv' " Why swap the engine?

A lot of the problems are with week batteries... leave the box..and put the 3l bmw lump in wireing loom conversion.. they 230 break.. no problems and if u wanted to get rid of the transfer bmw man box aswell keep the turbo.
