... went to see the P38 today, last one on the list and the one that edges it over the others other than on price and from a private seller so no warranty!

99/V 85k miles in the right color combination and condition for me. Spent about an hour going over the car, here are the findings -

Under the oil filler cap, there were a few very small droplets of water however it was snowing moderately at the time and it could have been a flake of snow that i didnt notice whilst i was chatting. The oil didn;t look like it had seen water, but I did wipe my finger round and there was a lighter goldy looking possibly water contaminated look, very hard to tell tho. Stupidly the one thing I didnt pull out was the dipstick to check.

There was an SRS warning light on, the car was MOT'd 2 weeks ago with this warning light on and passed to my surprise.

Air suspension was much quicker than others i had seen and seemed to work very well.

Radio code is missing, and out of use, CD player was non existent and the parcel shelf was missing.
These arent show stoppers, all fixable, but all cost.

Also the battery was shot. Started when I turned up, needed a jump when we were messing about with things.

Air con wasnt the coldest either.

One other thing was there was a mechanical noise, like a worn pulley possibly or the alternator, a whining, not too bad, but noticeable. Was hard to pin point where it was coming from. What could it be?

It drove very well, engine was running for 30 minutes at kerbside, no overheating and needle stuck dead center.

It had a £2k service in the summer and lots of small bits done.

Everything else seemed to work fine, and the car was really nice, and exactly what I want apart from on price.

Anything I've said ring alarm bells?

i would seriously get a hyrocarbon test on the top 3 choices but deffo on the one you want to buy! it'd be worth paying for a mechanic to come out and have a look for you. a few quid now may well save you pain and upset later on!!

that said, if your like me then youve made yr decision by now and are already counting the cash out ready to go and buy!!!

Will an AA / RAC vehicle check do a Hydrocarbon test? What does that show? HGF!?

Brutus, can't see anything on Ebay, Iam after an Black / Black 99 - 01...

How the fook can yi tell how cold the air con was in this weather,,,,
and get the price down fir the lack of code, and that whirring noise dunt sound good,,,,,nor the goldy sludge,, or the,,,,,, it all sound a bit suspect,,,,,,:eek::eek: apart from the colour,, better get an check done on it first,,,,;)

it will show combustion gases in the coolant, this can be HGF or the dreaded slipped liner it will at least give you an idea of the current state of the block/hg better ask aa/rac if they do it

It seems the AA or RAC checks don't do Hydro Carbon tests, and really just test things anyone who knows how to look over a car would check for anyway, so at £350 for a check over, little to gain.
So, where's the sorta place I can get a HC test please?

Ok ta.
Out of interest, is the 4.0SE anymore or less reliable? Quite a few going in top condition for reasonable money, only thing is, I'll have in the back of mind that the 4.6HSE was what I was really after lol...

Some say 4.6's used the better cast blocks but others say they slightly labour in first because of the extra power. 4.6 ZF slightly stronger.

I've had one of each (yes I'm a fool)... just go for whats in better nick, miniscule difference
