110 eating diffs

hi all my mates got a 110 and we go to korc and frickley alot but its eating front and rear diffs now i dont know if thats just because there weak witch i know there not the best part off a defender or could something be causing them to go
we take 3 to 4 defenders when we go and none of the others have this problem :confused:

i know there are uprated diffs out there but someone told me a standard diff set up right would last is this right

Less right throttle,

step by step guide:

Buy a Series 2a petrol,
Learn to drive it off road,
No more breakages.

Mechanical sympathy needed.

Lot would depend on what he's doing, what tyres and add-ons he has, is it lifted for instance etc.

A standard diff should last as long as any other drive part, if not longer ... ;)

No-one can possibly say what's wrong on the amount of info you've posted .. pics would be good, what does 'eating' diffs mean, how are they breaking, any other parts breaking, how often do his UJ's go, what's he doing when they go .. so many possibilities ... ;)
 
Ok enlighten us more,

Check all hub caps, seals and diff seals if any one has failed it will allow water and ****e into the diff making it wear out quicker and fail sooner. but the probable cause is driver being over enthusiastic.

Is the vehicle a TDI? Diesel engined vehicles tend to 'with thew wrong driver' deliver the power more harshly than a V8 because the gear changes and dropping of the clutch can be harsh whereas a V8 can hold 3rd gear low all day long with loada grunt to pull away with.

I have changed my fair share of diffs at our local Pay and Play it amazes me how the motors last as long as they do.

For instance:

My mates dads rear diff self destructed loadsa power through bog needed to change the diff no other way out than through the bog or seriously deep water. They spent 4 hours changing the diff cos they couldnt get the propshaft off the slider has never been greased so it was soild they hammered the prop off fitted the s/h diff without silicone or gasket or even cleaning the flange just bolted it up then took over 2 hours struggling to refit thr prop. lack of maintainance and no real idea how things work was their down fall. After 3.5 hours of them struggling we went and helped. 10 minutes later I had the prop off, greased, closed and opened and refitted.

its a 200tdi running insa turbo specials ,2in lift kit ,snorkel

it seems to be a few bits that go really and it always seems to go when driving normal
like today all working fine pulls up to watch someone do somet gets back in sets of and it gos not like he was flat out up a hill

Is he putting any oil in the diff?;) I've heard the Salisbury diffs need some careful setting up - perhaps that is being done badly?

But what goes, and what do you mean by goes? Do you mean he loses teeth of the diff pinion? Do you mean the half-shaft breaks? Do you mean a drive flange breaks? Do you mean a UJ breaks? Do you mean a prop falls apart? You have to define 'goes' a bit better ...
 
what diffs are you putting in 10 or 24 spline if is had the rear axle changed for a disco axle with disc's to get rid of the salis

are they standard diffs your putting in or are you doing the repairs your self

if its is indeed a salisbury it needs the correct pre loading. You need to spread the axle casing to remove the old one out if it falls out its wrong!
