Hello to all, a friend of mine has a 1999 freelander diesel. She returned from Xmas hols on back of a recovery truck. Have been told fuel pump u/s. where is pump located, is this an intensive job to change it, many thanks for any replies.

They have two pumps, one in tank and one in the engine bay. However make sure that it is the fault as we have had many come in with a suposed pump failed and it turned out to be not the case

to quote the mighty haynes manual:

"Only diesel vehicles fitted with the td4 engine up to 2003 model year have a fuel tank mounted pump."

"Only diesel vehicles fitted with the td4 engine from 2003 model year have a wheel arch mounted pump"

Manual No. 3929, Section 4B.8 Fuel Pump Unit - removal and refitting

what are the symptoms, did it cut out while running, or did it refuse to start ? I assume it's the td4 engine ? give us some more info !

If it's refusing to start, it could be many things, including (commonly) injector fault, (not so common) cam sensor and so on.

Mine is V6 and only has one which the one inside the tank. It cut off when the fuel is low. Removed the fuel pump under the passenger seat, gave it a good clean using petrol and so far no more problem.
It wasnt hard thing to do, just make sure you open the fuel cap to release the pressure.

Have you got access to Rave that covers the later than 2003 models the only ones I've found have been the earlier ones. I have a 2005 TD4 and it only has a single pump in the RH wheelarch. It's just a sender unit in the tank.
