going back to gearbox ratios - just seen this...

PG1 Gearbox is a five-speed constant mesh gearbox, which employs helical gears for speed transmission and final drive.
PG1 Transmission
The transmission casings are of a full aluminium construction and all other components optimised for improved weight. (37kg dry).

The gearbox can be supplied with either a standard open differential or a Limited Slip Differential presently Torsen, the name which is derived from TORque SENsing.

Due to the modular design of the gearbox various final drive ratio and 1st to 5th gear ratio combinations have been used. Including both present and past an overall total of 21 ratio combinations, 5 speedometer gear ratios; and 7 clutch lever designs for both hydraulic and cable operation can be called on to ensure the customers requirements are met.
The gearbox in its two types of standard (rated to 216Nm) and uprate (rated to 240Nm) is presently supplied to various companies including MG Rover, Land Rover, Honda and Lotus for vehicles.

a cheaper option would be a series PTO which has a mechanically operated dog clutch which you could either operate with a hidden lever or install some kind of solenoid or perhaps a stepper motor. the bits are fairly easy to source and wouldn't involve any expensive gear changes
 
Me un Porky looked in depth to this vcu [mondo not mondo] mod un decided if we could source a fluid drive [werks on hi bollicks] mag drive [electro flux] if we could find one bout the size of vcu so it wez bolt on mod and frig sum leccy ,then youd have 2wd=4wd . . . .we found some that could handle the power with a slip factor a merkin manufacterers but cost was the factor. . . . . .we is still lookin , wiff floppy's idea youd have to mod the whole rear end. . . . .:)
 
They did G99......................only there was never a recall for tens of thousands of FL1 with the old ratio. You are still going to get wear on the VCU, depending on vehicle speed, cornering, terrain etc

Besides, with a switch 2wd/4wd selector, think of the fuel saving alone, then you just switch to 4wd when you need it.

Works for the Honda CRV, Nissan X-Trail and others

Is there a way (through VIN #??) to find out whether your car has the revised VCU/IRD ratios ?? I got mine on january 9th 2001 but this means that, even the car is a MY01 it was put together in 2000 ? As the new VCU/IRD's were post 2001 is there any chance I got lucky ??????
 
EDIT, found this, it was changed in the 02 models

VIN YA999999 onwards

there is a date stamp on the IRD, it willl tell you when it was made.

Its on the upper part of the casing towards the pinion housing, will try and post pics.

According to the Haynes, history of the FL1:
Apparently "the IRD oil was supposed to last 160k miles or 10years, therefore the IRD was unlikely to cause concern to any Freelander's first few owners"

HAHA LMAO!!!!! What that stuff which turned black at 50k.

Here's something you might want to chase up, the 4wd system was designed partly by Steyr-Daimler-puch Fahrzeugtechnik in Austria, who built the IRD for LR, you wouldn't mind going across the border Willo and slapping them about a bit.

I'm sure it's already been covered, but useful to have in the same thread:

the early IRD gears down the gearbox by a ratio of 1.458:1 before distributing it to the front diff (integral with the IRD) and through the bevel gears to the prop.

Final drive in the old IRD geared at:
3.188:1
with final drive in rear diff geared to
3.214:1

Td4 1.467:1
1.8 1.467:1
KV6 1.359:1

IRD input shaft - IRD countershaft:
0.828:1

IRD countershaft - Front driveshaft:
