I've got a 1.8 freelander (yes i know its ****e) with 45k on the clock

gear selection when the engine gets hotter becomes more difficult

when its cold there is a couple of inches travel on the clutch pedal before it bites but as it gets hotter the clutch pedal has to be right on the floor to select, its really only 1st and reverse that are a problem, but still a pain!!

the clutch doesnt appear to be slipping at all hot or cold

any ideas?

thanks

And mine, be interesting to find out if temperature is causing this, I would have thought fluid expansion would have the reverse effect, thats assuming the fluid does expand when heated by engine temp.

I've just returned from a trip to France where, after some long high speed towing trips, I had the same problem as above and wondered whether anyone has ever resolved the problem.

You could try a new master cyl/slave cyl set first, around £44 - £50 for vehicles up to 2001, but check slave cylinder bracket for corrosion first, and make sure plastic " U " clip is fitted properly,( it keeps slave cyl in bracket. )

How can i tell if the u-clip is fitted properly...had a quick look and it rotates when twisted but doesnt seem to lock into any specific position?

bracket seems corrosion free

cheers

Has anyone got any other ideas about this problem?

The same's happening to my 1.8 es 2002. Already changed the master/slave cyl and its made no difference.

I've spent far too much on this heap of ****e already. I dont mind putting in a new clutch kit if its going to sort it out but I dont want to waste any more money.

Please help before I kill the thing and buy a Renault Clio:eek:

some of the linkages that go into the gearbox probably need a bit of tlc with grease the wifes did have this problem and i sorted it by doing this then the braket snapped and then she pulled the clutch peddle back up and pressed down again only to burst her slave cylinder and then I went to tow her in and getting out of my car on a steep hill fell and badly damaged my shoulder ! what a day!

I agree. Had the same problem with mine. Fitted a new master/slave cylinder kit but it only improved it slightly. Looks like a replacement clutch kit is the only answer.

Thanks for your answers:)

@tigger253... Did you put a new clutch kit in? Was it ok after?

@teddywood1... I'll get hubby and his mate to look at the linkages when they do the clutch. Hope your shoulder's ok:eek:

We're going for a new clutch, hopefully this week. I'm sick of spending money on this bloody thing, but I love driving it and it suits us for what we need it for. But what do you do? Get rid and start throwing money at something else???

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhh:mad:

landyliz nice to have a woman on here my should is painfull still and it was in January I did it , I never went to the hostpital in the first place but it was getting so bad I had to go to the doctors who went made at me and sent me to the hostpital . They xrayed me and it showed I had chiped some of the socket and 3 weeks ago had it injected with quaterzone due for more treatment on it in September all this for a freelander mind you I love them that why I have had another thanks for asking. The wifes car is now ok I did replace the master/slave cylinder and braket about 3 years ago and it never seemed right this one is spot on but I brought it from another place .

Just had mine back having had a new Sachs clutch kit fitted. Although the biting point still seems low it is much lighter to press the pedal. I was told the clutch had about another 1k before it would start slipping so it did need doing. Cost was £116 for the kit(ebay)and £160 for the job to be done. Sorted.:)
