no drive on my automatic but still have reverse

Hi, We have an automatic land rover discovery td5 on a 52 plate. My wife was driving home the other day when she lost all forward drive from the automatic gearbox. There was no warning, noises etc it just simply stopped driving forward. When i got out to it i realised we had no forward gears i.e D,1,2 and 3 but still had perfect working reverse gear. I'm desperate to have it repaired but haven't got a clue what the problem is. I'm seriously hoping its not a new gearbox as we can not afford this option :(
Please could somebody help with my problem so i can get the correct thing repaired.

Check your oil level in the box.

A friend had a similar problem and the GB oil level was too low - seepage over many years - which was 'cured' by adding about a litre of ATF.

Never did find the leak though, and he's still running it with no problems at all.
 
i actually have no idea, i put the disco in the hands of the garage but they have not heard of this part before so its the blind leading the blind. i May have to find somebody to do this as we cannot cope much longer without our car
 
I live in baginton, warwickshire so any advice or ideas who to call/use to get the job done correctly but hopefully at a reasonable price.
 
i had seen in an earlier post that the parts had been quoted at £80 but i don't seem to be having any luck in sourcing the part/parts required. If i do need clutch pack A then how do i go about obtaining this ? sorry if i seem stupid, when it comes to mechanical things i am not too clever at all but if you want your whole house renovating then im the man ha ha. thanks guys !!!!!
 
If the oil level is ok then you need to find a local auto box specialist

A lot of garages wont touch them
They may take it out and send it off but find the right place and cut out the middle man
 
Hi I'm reading a lot about this " Clutch Pack A " what is it and were can I get it from as I have reverse but no forward gears on my 1999/2000 discovery 2 , any help much appreciated thanks in advance

A garage that has never heard of an 'A' pack does not bode well :eek:
You need an assessment by an auto-trans. specialist if topping up the fluid level (if required) doesn't cure the problem; make sure you follow the maker's instructions for this task.
As others have said, the fluid colour will indicate the likely state of the 'box.
Out of curiosity, what's the car's mileage ?
 
If it's the ZF4hp22 box then the box is going to need a complete overhaul.
The friction material in the clutch packs wears into a fine dust which suspends in the fluid.
The filter will remove some of this but everything inside the box will get a covering of it.
Commonly manifests itself by causing problems with gear changing as it gets into & blocks the governor at the rear of the box.
Needs completely cleaning out - even a filter & fluid change can stir it up & cause problems.
This is on BMW but the same box & may be of interest: BMW E32 - ZF4HP22 4 - Speed automatic transmission rebuild. (masscom.net)
I've used these for a few bits (gaskets & the teflon seals mentioned in the link) for the one on my '86 Classic: JP (Automatic Transmissions) Ltd. - Welcome to JPAT Ltd You'll find schematics on their site.
Had the 'A' clutch apart on mine & found very little wear (by measurement of the plates) but plenty of the dust.

These 'boxes do stand the test of time though & I think it's usage is probably the key factor.
I bought my RRC at 40K & I seriously doubt the fluid would have been changed by the PO at such a low mileage; over the past 20K in my ownership I haven't done so either, but the 'box still functions perfectly.
The car is now 35 years old, so when it comes to fluid changes I've been advised to leave well alone :rolleyes:

With both my 2003 BMW auto and D1 auto, I've also been told to not bother doing oil changes.
 
That's also the advice given on Ashcroft's website.
