A 59 S2 your pics look like S3...
They may well be. A quick Google showed the only difference between 2/2a/3 was the handle shape. But that it does like to mislead so maybe 2a/3 are the same. Is this the style you have, again pic from Google?

Yes just dont have the knob and rod...if you look at my pic you can see a captive nut that swivels in the bracket so there must be a threaded rod but dont know how it attatches to the face plate behind the knob...

Does it work by turning the nob and screwing the mechanism out along the captive nut or does it work by pulling the rod in/out of the dash?

I think it works by the captive which is not solid it has 2 lugs on it that allows it swivel...I think I can knock something up with threaded rod and a look alike knob...but would like original if possible..

If that is the case and it slides through the faceplate you might be better with some round bar and cut threads into for the captive nut and handle. That would allow a smoother movement?

Those series two openers are rotary, just a threaded rod into the bracket swivel nut as in thread above. A washer and circlip behind the mounting bracket prevent the knob from moving out when turned I think.
