Hi everyone, I am a complete landrover novice but have just inherited a new project... It's a 1978 LWB safari top 5 door erm.... landrover. I think i'm right in saying it's a series 3, but so far that's all I know!! As you can imagine I have a million questions, (well maybe not a million, but quite a few) but the first is related to the chassis & the second is related to steering, so here goes.
My new "project" needs a new chassis (no suprise there). "Easy, I'll just buy a new one" i thought, but then I discovered there are quite a few manufacturers to choose from, so I guess my first question is "Which one?"
My next conundrum is to do with power steering (I know this has been covered before) I would like to fit power steering to my new chassis, but which is best? I see alot of people mentioning P38 boxes, but is there any reason why I can't use a Discovery setup? (I have a lead on one with a 300TDI lump in it) I would like to transplant the engine into my new project, so can I use the steering as well as the engine?

Hope that's not too much for a first post!

Hi welcome, can't help with the power steering, better off posting in the series section, someone there might be able to answer. As for chassis, I know richards will put the engine mounts where you want them as you are planning to swap to 300tdi. Maer might do the same and unsure with marsland. I would stay away from shielder going by what others have said.

Hi and welcome!

Lots to keep you busy with your Landy then! There are several chassis manufacturers. I’m leaning towards Richards for my 90.
You can fit power steering but if you get a new chassis, make sure it’s one that doesn’t need the chassis welding to fit .

Thanks for all your replies chaps, much appreciated. I too am leaning towards a richards chassis, I understand they are quite flexible with customer requirements. Depending on what decision I make regards the power steering, I might ask them if they could include brackets on the frame before galvanising.
