  1. am experiencing a problem with my 2004 def 90 td5 which has occurred twice now at very inconvenient times,
    When driving the engine suddenly cuts out,
    Turn the key and it starts like normal, and has no problem, accelerates normally, everything seems to work OK, (not that I've had time to check because it's been in traffic both times).
    I'm thinking it could be a problem with the ignition switch on the steering column.is there any way of checking it?
    Has anyone had a similar problem and if so what was the remedy.
    This is starting to get dangerous, my wife's not a happy bunny.

There are a couple of things that caused intermittent cutting out on mine. One was oil in the injector loom. This is usually associated with poor or rough running but on mine it resulted in occasional cutting out. Another was a fuel feed problem. The smaller inner rubber washer on the fuel filter had somehow got creased up, perhaps as a result of not enough lubrication on installation, and wasn't sealing properly.
Have you got any means of reading and resetting the fault codes, with a Nanocom or something similar? That can be revealing for a TD5, and it's difficult to make much headway in maintaining a TD5 without one.

I've had oil in the injector loom before and didn't give the same feeling, I'll check the washer though, but it's getting on towards 12 months since changed.
Unfortunately I don't have access to a nanocom mores the pity.
The problem there is no warning, no feel in engine beat or judder that could signal a fault, it's just like turning the key off, and the two times it's occurred have been in different situations of driving.... bizarre
 
I would definitely recommend that you get someone with a diagnostic computer to read the error codes first. You'll need a Nanocom or similar to set a new one up properly with the vehicle too
Agreed, this is going to be an interesting experience here in deep Central Portugal.
 
Well, all the more reason why you might need a Nanocom then. It's not as if every Portuguese mechanic will be au fait with TD5s.
 
lf your ECU needs repair there's a guy near me who specialises in them.

There's some silly prices online for TD5 ECU repair, l've seen prices up to £1,000 for "reconditioned" ECU's

This guy charges 10% of that figure, he repaired mine for £80

l'm sure l could help you out, if you send it to me l will take it to him, get it repaired and then post it back to you.

Obviously you'll have to cover my costs (and also trust me lol, but look at my history on here and it should make you feel better)

It's now a nightmare here after Brexit...if you use Royal Mail to send a parcel you won't get it if you use a courior you have to pay custom clearance and even IVA charges on something you own and is secondhand and thats with a company used to sending parts round the world anything wrong with paperwork and it will sit in customs in Lisbon for months...
