P38A A series of faults

First leg of the trip complete and sitting at Chobham services waiting for my ex to arrive.

Bit of an oil leak from somewhere around the dipstick area, but seems to be coming down the side of the block from higher up. Most odd. Could be the cam cover I guess, despite me installing a new gasket.

Also HVAC appears to be (unsurprisingly) faulty as it is blowing warm air out on the near side despite both sides set to 'LO'

Cruise control also not functional, but 70 is achievable without it needing to be thrashed.

Sagging headlining is annoying. Need to look at the instrument cluster back lights, I suspect I have the LED's in the wrong way round
My 98 DSE had the cruise control button but none of the bits that operate it under the bonnet, I suspected it was an option. My 02 4.6 has all the vacuum parts under the bonnet but the tube from the accelerator to the vacuum bellows had split in about five places, ran a new tube and hey presto it all worked.

Hum, I had assumed that as the car uses a fly-by-wire accelerator that the cruise system was entirely in the ecu...I was fiddling with the rocker momentary switch on the lights stalk and pressing the 'set' button in the hope that something might happen, including just a light illuminating on the instrument cluster, but no such luck

What a plum...
The momentary rocker on the lights stalk is for the instrument lightning dimmer
To engage cruise you're meant to press the 'highway' button way over on the passenger side of the dash

The diesel is fly by wire and all done by ECU so no extra gubbins under the bonnet

There are no "bits under the bonnet" on the diesel, it's all done by the EDC.
Whoops an echo:oops:
The feature can be turned on in the BECM and then you just need the switches as I'm pretty sure that the wiring is all there.

had most of the under dash and all of the centre console in pieces today to pull the passenger side blend motor out. Stripped it down and realigned the pot with the drive gear, lightly greasing up all the gears and the worm drive. Also fixed an issue with the drivers side rear vent which was jammed up, plus gave averything a good clean with anti-bac wipes as well as a hoover out.

Had some fun and games getting the glove box back in after not properly seating the release cable. Finally got it all buttoned up and decided to give it a test...only no back-light on the HEVAC display now :( Arggggh...

Not all LEDs ae dimmable.

That glove box is a total ****er to get back right. I gave up, slammed it shut and have only opened once since.

Only swapped instrument cluster bulbs for LED's, hadn't touched the HEVAC as it was working fine till I had to move it to work on the blend motor, now as is typical it has stopped illuminating

HEVAC illumination feed comes via the instrument cluster. That's how the BECM adjusts the brightness for cluster & HEVAC.

I didn't touch the instrument cluster while dealing with the blend motors though, only the HEVAC control unit that I unplugged and removed while digging around, although probably needn't have.

Now I have just lost backlight on the HEVAC display so chances are the bulb (green bulb holder in the middle of the unit I believe) has blown or somehow been disconnected from the circuit.

Hopefully it will be a simple fix.

Make sure the connectors are fully home, I got caught with one that was not latched.

It was the bulb.

Managed to modify the bulb holder and one of the green LED's that I'd bought for the instrument cluster to do the job.

Still have the book symbol displaying, but cool air blowing out of the passenger side, so I guess at least one of the drivers side blend motors needs attention, unless of course a lack of a belt to drive the AC pump can throw an error (AC wasn't switched on). Almost tempted to get the AC working...

Did my 86 mile journey back with my son to my near work digs, cruise worked well and the trip computer claimed I was returning 40mpg at a cruising speed of 65 ish on the motorway. Engine even felt stronger by the end of the trip too, pulling well on hills. Naturally it's marking its territory everytime I stop with a few oil spots. Almost tempted to name it the Amoco Cadiz seeing as Exxon Valdez is taken by a mate's older Bentley Turbo R...

Lack of an aircon belt will not produce any error. You should get the aircon working and use it, it helps keep the electronics free of condensation.
