Alpine window seal replacement

The alpine window seals on my 90 (aesthetically) look in bad shape (cracked; and dirty on the seal to the metal. They don’t leak (yet).

The local garage said they are a nightmare to replace; and after watching a few YouTube videos I’m entirely not confident to do it myself.

Would AutoGlass do this for me?

And im assuming I would need to provide the alpine seals?

Yes they are. Are they actually leaking? If so use a thin flat tool to pry back a tiny bit and stick some silicone in. That'll kick the problem down the road for a couple more years

If it’s just cosmetic appearance that’s the problem, fine scotchbrite/pan scrub with some back to black with remove the oxidation and tart them up - if suspect a leak I recommend “Captain Tolleys creeping crack cure” (really!)

the jobs dead easy. Make sure you buy the right seal first and use a plastic pry.

Brittanica had a video on how to do them using the string method. He claimed it was much easier. I'm hoping that's true because I've just had my roof off and resprayed so I've got to do two of them.

I did mine and found it an easy DIY job, it makes the job easier if you have an insert tool like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254219282069
I used one of my wife's kitchen utensils because I am too tight to by one.

It’s really easy, I used fairy liquid to get the seals nice and lubricated and they went in no problem, first time I had ever put any type of window in a car, looked a lot smarter and stopped the leaks!

If you get the wrong size seal they leak into the pressing in the safari roof which you don’t notice until you brake at a junction on a cold morning and all the water runs in you lap

Make sure you only fit LR OE seals and also there are two thicknesses of glass used so check what yours are.

Make the join in the seal at the top or they leak like crazy.
The water runs inside the roof and ends up in the front foot wells, making you think it's the door seals or bulkhead that's leaking.

Please let us know how you get on. I will have to undertake this job in the future so keen to see how you manage. If possible give us a rundown on parts, kit you use and technique. If you are doing both you will hopefully be well versed by the time you fit the second.
