hi I'm a new owner of a 2001 td5 defender and on the way home the temp quage was all over the place and then eventually stopped working because of lack of water when I got home I let her cool down and the gradually added around 6 ltr of fresh water and the quage kicked back in.. Just wondering if anyone has any information regarding what this could be.. there is a light oil leak on the engine cover and looks like it was an advisory on the new mot. thanks for your time Neil...

My first thought would be dont drive it anymore until you have mech take a look asap.
Early td5 are known for liking a head gasket or two, google plastic head dowels td5 and have a read.
As for the oil leak, dont worry about that.

Buy it from a dealer or private?

a private sale . I've topped up the water and it seems to be holding up fine now. it did take around 6 ltr though. and Also I sucked a bit out of the bottle and it was merky. not sure it's oily would it be normal to have dirty water in the system. cheers Neil

My main concern would be the fact it spat the coolant out in the first place.
Next time you drive it and it gets to full operating temperature see how hard the top radiator hose is.
