4.4 petrol L322 04 plate

The 2.7 seems a bit too much to take on right now, so I'm gunna grab a 4.4 litre petrol l322, which is an 04 plate.

It has one problem, in that the gears slip in auto mode.

Put it in either 4wd mode or tip tonic mode and it drives fine through all the gears. Leave it in drive and it impersonated Steven Gerrard.

What is that likely to be?

Worst case, that would be a replacement gearbox, but I'm still not sure as to why it slips in auto mode but not Tektronix or 4x4 mode.

Could it possibly be a solenoid? I mean if it were the box or torque converter it would slip in riptronic... wouldn't it?

If it was an easy fix, then it would have been done by the previous owner I'd of thought. You never sell a good car. It all depends on your budget, time and final goal or you may just like repairing stuff. It if gets too expensive, it won't be apparent until you've invested a lot of time and money. @Bemble is a man in the knowledge and @Henry_b has some experience I think here. Along with many others in our club :)

Every 2 years I have to buy a car and take it to Turkey, as it keeps the wife silent.

A working car with no faults will be expensive, ergo you look for a good car with a fault or two.

If the gearbox was busted and the car didn't drive, that's defo a replacement box, however, this one slips in automatic mode, but not in riptronic mode or 4wd mode, therefore, it requires a repair, rather than a replacement.

My only question is what's the probable cause? As logic would dictate that if the problem was major, it would slip regardless as to what mode the gearbox was in.
 
I with Data always 4WD.
what you maybe thinking is the special progams switch which I am pretty sure uses different ways it uses the gears. The tiptronic is the same you are telling the box what gear you want and when in use it again deals with the gearbox differently.
Possible it keeps the TQ locked in these situations,
I am guesstimating that opinion cos at the moment I am feeling to lazy to look in my manuals:D.

Peugeot 108 with Toyota 3cylengine.
