Coil spring broke would be my guess.

checked the spring from top to bottom no break, but looked at front wish bone mount and the inner metal sleeve to the rubber moves looks like they are not together any more, maybe this is the problem is a new rubber easy to do

looks like it but in rubber not ploy.
RBX101790 - FRONT LOWER ARM BUSH FOR FREELANDER 1 - FITS TO BOLT END OF SUSPENSION ARM

The front wishbone bush never fails.
The large rear bush in the aluminium housing can fail, and makes noise when it does, as the wishbone moves backwards over bumps in an uncontrolled manner.

Aha, I replaced my front wishbones and bushes whilst refurbing the front end.
The front bushes didn't make it to the next MOT before the rubber ripped away from the outer shell making for another replacement!!

Never seen that with a factory bush. Modern replacements don't seem as good quality as originals.
Maybe I should have said that failed front bushes don't generally make any noise?

thanks all,how can i check the aluminium one for wear please
With a pry bar. Just lever between the large washer and aluminium housing, front and back, and see how much movement there is. If movement is excessive, then release the large nut, and remove the washer to check the bush visually. Leverage on the wishbone while looking will show up any cracking in the rubber.
