Hi all,

Hope you are all well!

As we are having an actual Summer this year i find that just having the windows down is no longer enough to stop the moans from the passengers in the car.
My aircon hasn't worked since i got the car so my question is.......

What are the most common causes of aircon not working on a TD5 discovery? (hopefully cheap and easy fixes)

Thank you in advance guys for the mass of answers to help my ears from being bombarded on warm days.

Its probably got no gas, But I dont know the Disco, but does the center of the AC pulley turn if you turn on the AC?

Power the AC pump clutch with 12v and see if it kicks in. It will if its ok, but dont run it for long. feel the pipes If you get 1 cold and 1 hot, or cold air you have gas. Then you need to look at the sensors in the system, so cant help anymore.

Or you could go to the Kwikfit/Halfords of your world and get them to vac/pres test then fill with gas and cross your fingers:).

Classic weak point is the whole system on a D2. But id start at the front pipe that goes to the dryer as it rubs on the p clip. Mine went here. Also condensers go and leak. All seals in pipework. And seals in compressor. Mine went in all those places. Stop leak can sort the seals. P clip pipe was a bit of a swine to replace and is a bit like a rubics cube to thread in. I cut my hand badly doing this so have bad memories plus it still leaked after.
Just open the sunroofs, unless they are cocooned in gorilla tape, which they probably are.

Poke test/charge nipple with small screwdriver, no puff of escaping gas = no gas = you need a pro to test the system.
 
On my golf last year air con man said leak in condenser, I did the above test 2 weeks ago it still had some pressure but don’t know how much put a new condenser on and got it recharged for £20 the other day and nice and cool now
 
Inspect the condenser (radiator at the front) for obvious damage, then take it to somewhere with test kit. Don't bother with halfrauds, in my experience they don't have a clue
 
I’ve seen several issues over the years with mate’s AC compressors on a D2.
1) the power connection plug was either corroded or wasn’t making full contact to energize the clutch plate coil.
2) the clutch plate didn’t have the single washer under the mount bolt and the compressor burned out from running all the time.
3) the clutch plate had 2 washers or too thick of a washer and it wasn’t able to engage when energized.
 
The price of regassing has gone up a lot. It cost me £38 to have my freelander done about 3 years ago. It cost £125 to the wifes Honda Jazz last week and Ive got doubts about that garage, they said the system was over pressurised even though it didnt get cold.

Thank you for all your replies guys,

I don't have sunroofs as it's a comercial, by the sounds of what i a have been reading this is a positive!

I shall start by seeing if there's any gas in the system as Lynall sugested then the "P" clip as this seems to have been mentioned quite alot.
Then grill of and work my way back.

Re-gassing isn't an issue for me as we have aircon engineers contracted to us who will do a recharge for £20 for me.

The price of regassing has gone up a lot. It cost me £38 to have my freelander done about 3 years ago. It cost £125 to the wifes Honda Jazz last week and Ive got doubts about that garage, they said the system was over pressurised even though it didnt get cold.

I think I read that over filling can stop it getting cold
 
If the AC system can hold pressure and run, a dye which glows green in UV light can be injected. This is used to find any small leaks which may not be obvious until the system is running.

Be aware that some less honest garages will charge you for the full quantity of new gas even if a full refill is not needed. The refill machine recovers any gas left in the system and pumps it back in when refilling. Any extra gas needed is added from a cylinder connected to the machine.

Once the system is running again, it should be used at least once a week. It also helps remove moisture from inside the car during winter when used with the heater.

Lack of use is the cause of many AC system problems as the seals fail if the compressor oil is not circulated.

Depends on the gas used. Generally speaking anything after 2014 has to have the newer (environmentally friendly) gas that, according to my regular outlet, is about three times the price; being 'green' can get expensive !
The last re-gas, on our late 'nineties daily this year, was £60; a price that hasn't changed for the past three years.
