TD5 won't move!

I'm new to defenders - picked up my first very recently. Drove it yesterday, all working fine....the diff shifter was sticking a little when I picked it up. Last night I managed to get it moving, so that seems to be working fine.

This morning, jumped in and started her up - all good - popped it into first and lift clutch. Nothing. No moving, not biting, any gear. Just won't shift.

(I know nothing about the mechanics of how these work, so please do explain as if you were speaking to a child....I'm a total novice and wondering how much this is all going to cost me )

Guessing the high/low stick is in neutral.

Yep, made sure to move that around this morning to be certain.
The floor underneath is all clean too, so nothing's coming out.

If the high/low stick is in neutral, the vehicle will not move.
Put the stick in high, no diff lock, the vehicle will move.

Move the little stick all the way to the right then down towards the seats.
You may have to do this with the engine running and in gear then let clutch out slowly while pulling stick towards the seats.

I guess it will cost you a few nights reading a manual.

I will give that a try later when I get home....and then find a manual online I can read as it didn't come with one.

An owners handbook will tell you all you need to know about basic stuff.

The full workshop manual is quite a hefty book, and you might want to print it off, unless you want to spend hours in front of a computer.
Brooklands Books probably do a reprint genuine manual for that, you can get them mail order, they are about 40 quid, I think.

Thanks mate! Appreciate that info and I'll take a look to get something ordered ASAP.

Loads of FREE online manuals available if you search, or the hard copies as above if you like to read a book still I do understand that it can be easier flicking back and forwards in a book, but a good electronic 1 has its benefits sometimes.

Landrovers have 3 'differentials' one on each axle (front and back) and one bolted to the output of the gearbox - which drives the front and back propellor shafts, which drive the front and back diffs.
The central diff (bolted to the gearbox) is called the 'Transfer box" (officially the LT230) this has 2 gears, High and Low and a 'lock' which allows you to drive both front and rear diff equally.

Like the normal gearbox this transfer box has to be in gear to 'drive' the output flange which turn the prop shafts which drive the diffs which turn the wheels.
High is for standard road use.

It’s usually the overdrive I the series that catches me out!
