I'm looking for a specialist to undertake a renovation of my 1960 LR SWB series 2. It's already on a galvanised chassis, briefly it requires the front wings, grill (and dash?) changing from s3 back to s2 and a full repaint, also new front seats and seat belts. It has a cab but I'd like rear side panels and rear door with windows (I have a roof). Please contact me if interested in quoting and undertaking this work. Thanks.

I am sure some one with more knowledge will come along and correct me but are you sure it is a series 2? Everything on it looks series 3 to me, the wings and dash definitely are, but the even the door hinges are the later versions. What engine/gearbox combination does it have as there are differences between them there that may identify it.

Them hinges look like 90/110 type not your normal early hinges .

@Airlandy why do you want to change to a S2?
It’s a lot of work(to pay for) for no real value. Now talking of cost, you could purchase all the stuff to do & change wings yourself over a weekend. Truck cab to hard top another weekend.
Problem may be the dash change. But that could be another weekend work
Good luck.

Unsure.. i only do modified motors so never knew what dash looks like.

when did S3 first come out?
1971 was the first series 3, but I believe the dash in the 2 and 2A had central gauges similar to a series 1. I think the bulkhead is different to accommodate these.

But I would still be interested in what the engine and gearbox setup is in the OP's vehicle for why they think it is a series 2 other than the reg plate.

Dont forget the chassis is the car, so so long as v5 says chassis and its on leafs, the op could bolt a shed to the top and it would still in the eyes of the law be a series 2.

Thinking about a it a shed might be more water tight!

I know that but the chassis is a galv replacement so this is slightly less relevant. Galv chassis has to be a like for like swap. I do not know enough about the differences tween series 2 and series 3 chassis but I am sure there are some as you specify when ordering.

Yes I think there are specific differences between series 2 and three chassis, The same way there are also differences between very early s2 chassis to later s2 chassis then onto the s2a chassis, but you could or could also get generic series 88 inch chassis which fitted all models and obviously we have no idea how old the chassis is.

I think again in the eyes of the law even if the axles have a series 3 serial number and all the other bolt on parts are also Series III the fact he has a registration document saying it's a series 2 means it's a series 2,
same as all the other parts that are/could be Series III could've been changed just as normal running repairs or accident repairs.

Not sure I completely agree with that as what you are saying is as long as you have the reg document your vehicle is fine. Which is exactly how ringing vehicles works. As long as you have a leaf spring vehicle with a replacement chassis you can put what ever leaf sprung reg plate on it you want and it becomes that vehicle.

Yes sadly thats pretty much it.
So for example if we had a series 2 and a series 3 each on galvanised chassis with no chassis numbers just a rivet or a screw on vin plate as per the factory in the cabin we could swap the numberplates and the screw or rivet on vin plates and the cars become each other!

Or I could break my s2 for spares making a few quid, then steal yours and fitting my original reg and vin plates from the s2 I broke up, actually thats just given me a business idea!

Just think how many used galv chassis you have seen for sale over the years

Looks like you've bought a Series 3 using the identity of an earlier series 2. Various reason this happens are, it's stolen and has been 'ringed' or someone's been evading road tax by using the historic class of the series 2. Shame really as most series 3s are tax exempt now. I'd get rid and not put any money into a vehicle that has questionable identity

First time for me on a Forum so didn't know how to pitch this and some Interesting feedback from you all. I am confident with the heritage of the vehicle for the last 30 years or so, having had close association and respect for the work undertaken on the vehicle. However, I'd now like to invest and restore this Landy to its original S2 1960 state, I appreciate we are but the custodians keeping these vehicles alive and loved and it will probably see my days out and will be passed on to my next generation. Is there a specialist able to go on this journey with me and undertake this work? Thanks

No classic landy people in Swindon area. There is some nice Independent 4x4 shops around here though.
I would say at least 5k to get this motor back to the correct age. This is due to most parts now are rotting & will need repair, probally cheaper to buy new but expect a wait (about 6-18 months) purchase the galv bulkhead.

don’t forget to wave at landrovers

The series 3 bulkhead won’t take the series 2 dash. Not without a complete remodel which will cost more than replacement. My bitsa is actually registered as an 88 rather than a series and has a S3 bulkhead. More photos of the chassis would reveal its type and a little research on the engine, gearbox and axle numbers would settle any questions on age or marque. If it was a S2 then someone has gone to a great deal of trouble to turn it into a 3 which has sadly made it worth much less both in terms of spondulicks and interest. It would take twice the money it is worth to change it to a 2 for very little reason and if it ends up in the hands of the police after say a fatality, your going to have to answer some very difficult questions you don’t seem to have the answers for.
I’d be confirming everything before taking it out on the road. Just to be safe.

Quite a few S2 owners put S3 wings on to give their landy a more modern look in the 70's and 80's. Maybe a previous owner did this and at the same time replaced a rotten bulkhead for a S3 one at the same time.
