I'm with RRDT, the Jag AJV8 is a sublime motor and hassle free. You want something refined for that money, not a tractor. Is the Classic on air? They didn't like corners at the best of times and something with that much poke really needs the suspension and brakes looking at. Maybe look at what Overfinch did to it?

Regarding cornering, the LR handling kit that superseded the Harvey Bailey system makes a lot of difference to the Classic at the expense of (allegedly) just half-an-inch of axle travel. It can be retro-fitted to '86 model years onwards.
Yes you've guessed it, I have it on my '87 Vouge ;)

One thing the 6.5 ton toeing rated rear springs do is improving cornering! If the police spec springs have a negative impact, well from what I know the mountings for an anti-roll bar are still there. Regardless of what you do, a RRC won't turn into race car.

Any reason why the kit won't fit a pre-86 model? The axles and suspession are the same, aren't they?

This pack is referred to as Handling Pack STC 8046, included are new rear springs & front/rear dampers for all RHD vehicles; dated June '91.
I'm not sure where I got the '86 date from, but the instruction booklet mentions drilling holes with a 12.7mm drill (supplied) so maybe the kit is a relatively universal fitment for classics (?)
Regarding your suspension question, the RRC went through many changes of spring rates over it's production life. This kit was developed by LR after they tried the Harvey Bailey set-up & was intended to improve handling whilst reverting to standard springs for comfort. Prior to this LR had just fitted heavy duty rear springs in an attempt to placate customers who had the audacity to complain about body roll

nb. for LHD diesels the kit is STC 8047
