So it’s been a week with no faults and things were going great until today ‍♂️

driving home from work today in my 2004 4.4 v8 petrol tank and started to get spluttering and popping through the air box and then cut out

car wouldn’t start back up so I was near a petrol station so I walked over to fill a Jerry can and put it in just incase still nothing

anyways my mate towed me off the main road to a car park 50metres away took tow strap off and just thought I’d try it again and it fired up

anyways decided to drive it home and no faults actually drove brilliant now the only thing different is it now revs just slightly under 1000rpm when before it was at 500rpm

Also just a note plugged in a zero faults came up wondering maybe fuel pump on the way out as when I checked the Schroeder valve I got no fuel or air pressure or did I run it of fuel as I had just under a quarter of a tank left

Sounds like you ran out of petrol, gauges are not always accurate. I reset the trip when I fill up so I know how far i can go before I need to refill, I never trust the gauge.

Guessing schoolboy error on my behalf best go brim her up and know when I get to a quarter of a tank refill ha ha

any ideas as to why it may be revving higher?

If it back fired through the inlet, it may have damaged the MAF which could be why it would be revving higher, but I really know nowt about the petrol V8
 
I believe there is a transfer pump in the fuel tank that moves it over to the other side as there is a hump in the middle this can cause a sense off more fuel than there is if the pump has packed in.

My RRC is has a reliable gauge, even to the low-fuel warning light coming on (discovered when getting low on fuel on very rare occasions) but I normally fill up when it drops to half a tank.
Never run out of petrol (touch wood) in the 14 years I've owned the car.
The trouble with fuel gauges on old cars is that they can tell the truth one day and lie the next when the wear gets too much. The trip never lies.

Replaced the tank on my RRC some years ago - leakage due to corrosion.
It's got the pump in the top & the level sender on the side.
All went well.
En route to the local multiplex with Mrs R & our two small boys when it came to a halt.
Clearly a no fuel issue.
Slightly puzzled as the low warning light had only just come on & I intended to refuel at the filling station on the same complex.
Put the spare fuel in & off we went again.
Checked it all & I now know that the fuel pump pick up pipe on that pump is length adjustable & the new tank was slightly deeper than the old.
 
On a couple of occasions - not recently! - I've decided to fill the tank on my Classic but on both occasions I've lost my bottle as the pump hit £50 & still taking it full flow.
Mind you, if you fill it you're burning extra fuel to pull the extra weight around.....or at least that's how I explained it to myself :)

I've been keeping the RR & our daily topped up ever since the fake 'fuel shortages' last October that saw queue's of gullible drivers stretching out of the forecourts & blocking roads. At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious once a tank is full it costs the same to keep it that way as it does putting a few litres into a nearly empty tank. At the start of that 'shortages' debacle we had about two thirds of a tank in both cars & consequently un-effected by the media induced panic buying.

+1^^^ with the occasional strikes over here I keep all mine full, never below half except on a long run. The in tank pumps last longer too as they do not have to work as hard lifting the fuel.
 
After I had the tank replaced in my RRC the fuel gauge had me with my pants down. For some reason it now shows 10 liters more than there are actually in. Meabing when the warning light goes on you are good for maybe (!) 15 km, if it stays on your out of fuel.

Funny side note, in Tunesia they managed to get 75 liters in the not empty 70 liter tank.
