this is my fun project 1965 series 2a
the engine is disco 200tdi
gearbox defender
chassis and axles from an early 80s range rover
knackered seats from a defender
35" simex tyres x5
not sure on the lift
so i started on the seats, got a re-trimming kit from exmoor trim, and also bench seats with same material, also bought a canvas and full hood stick set, and defender door rubber seals
hear is a few pic of the work done at the moment, hope you like it so far..Stan.

It’s a bitsa. Have said before check the wheel base( that’s not a range chassis I can tell from your posted photos)

Looks better with the canvas

hi phill, it is early 80s late 70s rangie chassis,
and has been professionally shortend to accept the 2a body...
i had it checked over by K Brooks land rover specialist in Blackpool..
who told me all the important bits so that i can buy correct parts when needed..he also did the cam belt change because i did not know when it was last done, he said the belt he took of looked ok but better safe than sorry...

well in that case i might as well scrap it then .... i thought someone might like it, i was going to do loads of upgrades to make it my own and thought people on here would like to see the progression in pictures..how wrong was i :(

You kind of fell in the personal like and enter the purist. I am more into original look, but if improvement can be added then nothing wrong.
If you are happy to spend time and money to drag look, an old series that cannot be made original so be it.

Yep we like photos but we also like to point out things so the owner has more knowledge.from photos we see problems & ideas.
We are a nice bunch who sometimes moan about changing the motors looks.
oh & yes I have had a bitsa over 30years ago so I know the reactions.

I was just being facetious, you do whatever you want to do as its your vehicle. Just because it's completely illegal to be claiming tax and mot exemption doesn't mean you shouldn't be doing it .

The thing is on the older live axle land rovers the chassis is the car, ie so long as you are on the original chassis you can have any body/axles/engines and its still the same car in the eyes of the dvla/law, change the chassis for one from another model and voila its now a range rover with a series body on it, that in itself does not make it bad/wrong, of course if its and early rr chassis it may still be tax and mot exempt.
In your shoes my only real concern would be what the insurance company say, if they are happy then crack on.

Iirc there are get out clauses, one being if it was modded before 1997 (I think) then its is what it is no worries, of course how they or you would prove that I am not sure, maybe invoice for for chassis work?

The dvla/dvsa do a points system to assess the cars id, you would have to check but various part are worth certain points, for example engine 1 point, axles same and so on, as soon as major **** starts to happen all bets are off.

Don't get me wrong, I've nothing against a hybrid/bitsa, whatever you want to call it, but it is what it is and that's not a 2A. Putting your mark on it.. go for it, just don't fall full of the rules if you plan on keeping it in the road.
There don't seem to be as many customs/hybrids about anymore

It says 2A on the V5, which sounds dodgy to me, could cause problems if there's ever an issue (accident) or a sale

I think it looks great. It’s certainly a bitsa-Landy but how many are original? I’ve seen landies advertised as series landies that are tax exempt yet the only part that is clearly tax exempt is the bolted-on vin plate! Hybrids used to be quite common when defenders were relatively new but as prices dropped and the rules changed, it knocked that on the head.
But, if it was me, I’d replace the front hoop thing with a decent full roll cage, which would look very smart with a soft top. Otherwise, keep the photos coming!

whenever I see something like this I always think back to that bloke in the modded 110 with mismatched brake calipers and various over issues, that came off the road and killed his children and all the **** that went with it, I cannot remember if he went to prison or not?
The point being, its all fine and rosey until something serious happens, and if they investigated down as far as the brake calipers on the 110, just imagine what they would/could do with a car thats not what it claims to be
Add in the sue the arse off eveybody culture we are in, and you are a hrave/ foolhardy man to ignore the possible consequences
Imagine it now with this plastered here and most likely elsewhere, have an accident and all the evidence they can dream of is right there in front of them!
