Hey everyone.
I fancy the tdv8 07 onwards I'm not shore about the command shift on the fresher gen3 thou I would be interested to hear your views. I'm thinking a good history with mileage around 90k to 120k I like the sport and the brick shape I haven't decided on shape yet. 95% of my driving will be on the road with 5% off road nothing hardcore the odd Farm track or paddock. I will be towing a trailer occasionally.

What would you guys recommend the stick auto or command shift ? Are there any other benefits of going with the fresher 09-12 Any buying tips welcome

When you think you know enough about Range Rovers to buy one, But not enough to know you shouldn't:)

What little confidence I have in the reliability of the gen 3 is draining away :( maybe the x5 07-13 or Toerag would be a better choice then
I don't wanna be in the garage every 5 minutes the odd fix I can handle say 3 or 4k on repairs over 40,000 miles but if its more like 3k repairs every 10,000 miles my pockets not that deep.

The X5 is no better according to reports, as for the Toerag, my experience of VAG products is not good. If you want reliable, get a Toyota Land Cruiser..

I had the 3.2 DID shogun a few years back it was a great tool good mpg also I like the amazon also.
In my price range The x5 3.0d 07-13 or the tdv8 07-12 seem to be a good choice for towing a 3500kgs trailer enough power to keep a steady speed on hills without to much drama. There are comprehensive warranty's that cover 12 years old and 150k for around £1500 for 3years might take the sting out owning a tdv8

IMO they are not all bad, if you get a well maintained example then you should be ok. TBH I haven't seen many posts for the TDV8 so that should say something.
been reading the cam chain tensioner can be expensive around £1800 to repair if the engines ticking on start up it seems to be common 80k to 120k other then that it seems mainly electrical or suspension related problems. I doesn't need to be the tdv8 the tdv6 would tow nearly as well I should imagine. I was just at warranty's the gold covers suspension electrical fuel system engine gearbox even bushes it might be the way to go. Thanks

You sound a bit disappointed?
By command shift, you mean the flappy paddles? Yep got them never use them the TDV8 gets up and goes better than you can with the 8 speed box all on its own:D. I do now and again touch 1 of the paddles by mistake and then wonder why it has not changed up;). Don’t know if it’s an option but don’t need it:D.

Right our 2011 has been a great car. It gets work if needed and always gets it’s service. Don’t know how much it has cost, but I don’t see it as excessive. It has had a few non service items but to be honest for an 11yr old car it’s fine in my book.
Don’t rush at the first shiny 1:) but there are good 1s out there so spend time looking. It will help if you are also a little handy with spanner’s and prepared to invest in diagnostics.
We got ours from Germany and drove it home here, it has done a couple of trips back to the UK, which included towing trailers back.
They eat miles effortlessly. We would not hesitate to get in it and drive back the 1600miles to the UK:).

Oh but don’t get me wrong we both enjoy a drive in the P38 or the “mudball” too:D.
Cat amoungts the pigeons :D:D.

The TDV6 chain tensioner also plays up, rattling on start up. I ignored mine for 2 years, then decided to fix it, which took ½ a day, costing under £200, so why is someone wanting £1800 for what is technically an easy and cheap fix.

The V6 has a reputation for breaking cranks I think.

You will need very deep pockets and at least a 5k emergency repair fund and yes keep away from the V6 as the cranks do indeed SNAP. Most are for sale FOR A REASON which you also have to take in to account UNLESS you know of a car which has been loved and pampered and the owner is only selling because they have either upgraded or had a change to another type of car. You get what you pay for these days too. FULL & DETAILED SERVICE HISTORY is key.

I had a 3.2 did. Souped up but very thirsty compared to a range rover. Towed well but incapable off-road not proper 4wd and flimsy. If that meets your standards I think you would be pleasantly surprised by tdv8 provided you don’t get a lemon.
My 2.8 Pajero was a darn site better than the P38 off road, LSD rear diff, lockable centre diff it would go anywhere. No crap VCU excuse for a centre diff lock, no machine gun traction control pretending to be an LSD, I would have another if I had the cash to buy a good one. It was good on fuel and the Aisin Warner auto box was trouble free unlike the ZF
