The keys move the latches. You might need to wiggle them or pull by sticking your fingers in the cassette deck. It could also have been bent/mis-installed. So might need a little persuasion to come out.
They are always a bit fiddly but will come out eventually, make sure you have pushed the keys all the way in, once they are fully inserted they release a couple of clips on each side of the stereo which should allow it to be pulled out of the fascia, however, if you pull straight back on the keys you are simply removing them from the stereo and allowing the retaining clips to engage again, you need to keep the keys fully inserted while pulling the unit out, as suggested probably easiest by using the cassette aperture.

I think you may have to remove the plastic trim below the head unit but it's a pita to do without breaking the clips. Ask me how I know

Maybe that was to take the facia out. I know there's a screw behind it for something.

They are inside the metal mounting case thing tight as a crab's backside.
If you have unlocked the latches with the keys and cannot get it to come out without exerting too much force, no matter how much you manage to keep it square,.....
You'll need to take it out with the mount on it.
You will be able to do this by inserting a very thin blade around the outside of the metal case.
As you do this the locking tabs, which are bent out from the mounting case, to stop it coming out, will need to be pushed flat back towards the case. These tabs are all parallel to the front face so this isn't as hard as it looks.
Once you have freed a few of them off it will start to move, so you will see which places you still need to work on.
I've had to do this with two LR head units so I think the way they fit them is a real sod!
Once you get the whole thing out you will probably be able to separate the unit from the mount.

Thats right, as theres nothing for the “keys” to latch onto, all they do is push the locking tabs back onto the cage, so with them in place just grab the head unit via the cassette mouth and pull.
If its the first time removal since the unit was fitted in the factory, then it could be difficult as at the rear of the unit there’s a threaded post that pushing into a rubber grommet so by now its tight.
Just a standard procedure used for the old Phillips head units fitted in D1s
