Hello all,
I have returned my swivel housing to its rightful place. Unfortunately there seems to be an impingement on the movement back and forth over the ball. I've loosened off the pins but it hasn't made any difference. But on taking the top pin completely out, the swivel will go all the way on the ball as it should do. Is it just tight grease packing around the top pin, ot something else?As far as I can see, and as far as I know. I have reassembled it exactly in the reverse of the disassembly.
I should confess. There was a little bit of grease left in the packet. About a spoonful. Which I put in the hole of the top pin. And then pressed it down just to use it all up. Thought it would make its way down onto the ball easily enough. Other than that. Anyone else found it tight on full steer as it were? Will it get easier once the grease is spread even?
Opinions please. Don't hold back.

First off I would introduce your self, this lot are very funny about that, then give us a clue of vehicle type assuming it’s a 110 but what year would help,
Several axel types to choose from,

Sorry guys, my real name is Braders. I'm in the French Alpes restoring or getting my 1984 90 defender ready for a contrôle téchnique. They picked up on a lot of leaks. Including the swivel ball seals on both sides.

@Forgetfullonnames , how many shims on the top pin did you use to set preload? If not set, no shims used the pin will draw up too tight resulting in drag/restrictive ball movement.

+ where in Alpes are you? I'm in Annecy quite frequently. Also have 1987 Ninety

Live between Morzine and Thonon les Bains. Nice to meet y.
I have two shims in the top pin. Nothing is new so haven't done the preload test which I saw on Brittania Restorations YouTube last night. I also noticed that he pulls the axle out using a 7/16 threaded bolt, which I'm just going to look for. But in France(?) unlikely will find one. So I'll probably remove the wheelcap, enabling me to fit the circlip and pull it out like that. Didn't want to overthink it last night because I'm working outside and it was getting cold. And sleeping on it, has given me a good bit of incentive to get it done. Confidence has returned, but thanks for the reply. Something to bear in mind.

There's been some discussion on here about the shape and size of the swivel balls themselves. There seems to have been a batch on sale recently where the insides hadn't been machined out quite enough to accommodate the CV joint through the full range of movement. Last time I fitted new swivel balls I had this problem. If this is happening you can sometimes see witness marks where the outer casing of the CV is fouling the inside of the swivel ball and grind a little away as needed. Here's my experience:

Not the neatest bit of machining I've done, but everything is still working fine after another 15,000 miles or so.

I'm not saying this is exactly the problem you've got, but it's not unheard of.

Salut and welcome to the madness of Landyzone! Mike at Britannica and his videos are great technical references. Follow his videos and all should be well. Setting pre-load is very straight forward + there are a good number of very helpful LZ threads on this, use the search function top-right of screen.

Morzine to Thonon is a fine area. My son is at college near Annecy and I visit every 6 weeks or so [pre-covid]. I took the Ninety to Annecy / Haute Savoie for three weeks this summer, we had a great time. We've been walking the mountains for near 30 years now and love the both the Haute Savoie & Savoie. Here in Le Grand Bornand...
