Hi I'm Jimmy
Can anyone help I've got a 05 range rover Vogue 4.4v8 petrol, I drove it into garage changed gearbox as it was naffed and now it won't start... checked box for built-in ECU don't have it.Its selecting gears according to dashboard, It's getting petrol n sparking fires but won't fire up,changed coil packs and plugs nothing just backfired threw airbox n blew top off. Not showing any codes either.baffled I drove it in ...

Is that all you did to it change gearbox for like take its an auto?...I if it is an auto would check all electrical connections as iirc affects starting and running...

Had another look today and it's like timing is out smoking threw inlet back firing, I only replaced the gearbox and torque converter didn't touch engine...

Yes it fires but sending smoke out inlet n backfires now n then,it's like the timing is out but not touched it only replaced auto box n torque converter, n no fault codes at all

But do these modern RR auto box not speak to their individual ecu's you as I said need to check connections...it can't be timing

as Shippers says modern autos have individual ecus, prob not a compression fault!!
Allegedly the ecu is in the gearbox, and is coded to the vehicle
If you have the original box they can be changed,
Didn't watch the full video but hopefully can be changed in situ.

Hi already checked no ECU in gearbox, had a friend come look and listen while it was turned over and he says timings jumped and did I turn the flywheel the wrong way,I believe I did turn flywheel wrong way when tightening the torque converter up so checking timing tomorrow fingers crossed

Never suggested changing any parts, simply how is it cranking.
Also we don't know the full history.
No history with car apart from it drove in but was in gearbox fault mode and only driving in 5th gear so fitted new box

Had a friend look today who's pretty clued up he said because it was stood for a few weeks while waiting for box the oil would have left the timing chain tensioner cause slack chain and when I turned the flywheel the wrong way when tightening up the torque converter it knocked the timing out so I'm removing rockers etc tomorrow to check timing.

How did you get on? :)

Timing had jumped waiting for timing tools before I set it back up fingers crossed no damage....will update when tools come n I get it timed back up

Oh Crap, time it up, remove the plugs and do a compression test on the cylinders. Any difference between and you've got your answers. Right each reading down. I hope it survived

Only just found the time to have a tinker with it, ive timed it up but didn't want to try to start it due to the lower chain tensioner that goes threw side of head seems to be broken, not sure if it is or not but it's in two pieces and has a spring inside, are they supposed to lock together or is this how they are...I've currently just popped spring inside and it it together and lock it with a pin. Don't fancy shelling out 50 quid on another.

If in doubt change it out, the gamble is an engine!! Or at least a head and à whole load of grief
