HI folks,
has anyone had experience of painting with NATO green paint?
Bought some off ebay advertised as the genuine stuff. Certainly looked the part as I have used it before in the mob and some years back on a ex-military Defender.
The problem is as as follows. Have primed body with a grey standard primer and then applied the NATO green with a roller. Left outside in dry weather to dry off. Today it rains and what a mess! Bubbles and blisters in patches. Some parts OK though. Did rub the primer down prior to application of NATO paint. Could it be the primer and NATO paint reacting? If so why?
Bit p***ed off about this as paint cost £45 for 5 litres and now I'm faced with rubbing down again and possibly using a different paint.
Any ideas for painting with this stuff or alternative paints? Don't want to go over the top with the series III as it ain't that brilliant body wise.

which one did you buy? I'm about to buy some and need to know which to avoid!!
 
Bought the paint some months ago. Chap lives in Leeds area. No reason to doubt the mans integrity as he was a Landy nut and appeared honest. Said he'd used the stuff OK and sold to friends.
On looking at the paint job after the rain I've noticed that where I've tested a patch on the roof it's OK. This area has not got primer on it. Just the cream gloss paint as applied by the factory.
What does this tell me. Don't use primer or a different type of primer?
The NATO green is water based so should I use water based primer or etching primer.
Any body repair or paint experts out there got any thoughts?
Anyway, if I don't find a solution I will go to plan 'B'. That is buy a big tin of Smoothrite and give it a good walloping with a roller and brush.
OR,
Plan 'C' use blackboard paint like I did some years ago on an old Series II. Looked OK and covered a multitude of sins as well.
Would like it NATO green though.

i got my nato green paint from series 2 club look on their web site I have had no problems didnt bother with a primer just rolled it on and have a great finish
 
Thanks for the info. Will have a look later.
Still curious why the primer may affect the paint I bought. Tried putting a small coat on my 109 military and it went on and stayed on fine.
Will rub the Series III SWB down again and give it an other go.
What about using a water based primer before using the NATO green?

just spayed mine nato green used a place called colour tone in manchester they have other depots around the north then applyed with gun rollers leave air bubbles.

professionel painter here mate.....are you sure the nato green is water based as if it is it will need a clearcoat over the top otherwise it will wash off.....if you need better help i will forward my mobile number....
 
i had the same problem with mine . it seems it don't like primer , i had to sand it all back too the original colour ......
 
i just read the label on me tin of nato paint , and at the end of the list of warnings about body parts that may fall off if you use it ' it says " possible risk of impaired fertility " charmin.......

if you let me know what primer you were using i could help you further....most problems occur when the primer has not cured properly esp synthetic primer as you be using if you are rolling/brushing....also it will be unwise to flat the primer as it opens the substrate beneath and will react with the top coat....if you do have to flat and repaint synthetic then leave it at least over night flatted as this lets the paint beathe......sounds stupid but true...waterbase paints are quite friendly to primers as the solvent levels are low so reaction is quite rare...can you tell me the makers name of the nato paint as i cannot see it being waterbase as......the cost is cheap and would need a solvent top coat to protect it from the elements.....personally i think you used a topcoat/primer which are uncompatable.....or used a 2pack primer without the hardener by mistake

repainting my ex military 109 and believe me its not waterbase paint they use but synthetic based.....hard as crap as well......i cannot see the army using waterbase / 2 pack paints as the h and s involved is too complicated but synthetic is cheaper and does the job ok........

Used a roller to apply the paint. So possible that the patchiness of finish is air bubbles.
Could also be the primer problem as mentioned above. So, what's clearcoat?
Assume it's a sealer to put a barrier between different types of paint. Can this be brushed on or spray only?
Also can you explain the primer issue.
Think I should just take it back down to near as possible to original paint and start again?

Hi there,
Just checked the primer tin I got HMG paints in Manchester. It is synthetic. Not sure about the NATO green I got off ebay. See what you mean about it not being water based. Sure they guy said it was but I imagine all sorts of things from time to time. He said he orders it from a place in Scotland in a huge drum. This I saw with my eyes when he filled my 2 tins up. Can't remember the manufacturers name. Will try to e-mail him tomorrow for info.
Keep the useful info coming or put me in touch with someone who can spray a Landy cheap in the Manchester area!
