Hello all, I'm Karen, I joined the forum in July 18 thinking I would need lots of help, tips and advice after buying my first F1 Td4 (2005 - 131,000m), well she has never let me down, not once....However, a few things that I've started to notice over the past 2 weeks and I would be most grateful for your opinions and thoughts...xx

1.When I get in to the car after being stood all night, into reverse, handbrake off and car won't move....so I switch to first gear, edge forward and then reverse fine...(car probably doesn't want to go to do a 12 hour shift in local hospital :D)

2. Two orange lights on all the time, Traction & Hill Descent.

3. When driving, there is a 'knocking sound' on the nearside front, When I turn left, the noise is still there but when I turn right or full lock on the noise is bad, loud knocking and clunking thud....

From reading around the forums it could be a number of things....VCU, propshaft, bearings and brushes or bushes lol.....

I bought the car for £1400 in July 18, FSH and 2 x previous owners, current milage is 153,000 and MOT runs out Jan 22, I really don't think the car will pass its MOT, and pricing up the replacement parts from Bearmach type places is £900 + fitting at my local garage....so do I pay to get her fixed or is it time to say goodbye ??

Thanks for reading,
Much love,
Kal

Welcome. Nothing on your list sounds particularly terminal.
No 1 is your handbrake sticking, probably time to overhaul the rear brakes but could also be the cable needs replacing. No 2 isn't an mot failure unless the abs light is on too, there's lots of info in the FL section about TC/HDC lights. No 3 is either a CV joint or a wheel bearing.
Parts won't add up to a huge amount, if you have a decent local garage you'll be fine

Hi Kev, thank you for your reply, the local garage is really good, 'no frills' and not a rip off merchant. He has serviced, MOT'd and done bits and bobs on the car over the past few years. Sorry for this next question......the wheel won't fall off or anything dangerous while I'm driving it, will it? I have 2 gorgeous lurchers and my fur babies are precious cargo Ha Ha Ha xx

I've just got back from the garage....everything you said was correct thank you so much...I'm just looking now to buy the front left and right driveshafts... from the pictures on the product...does the drive shaft contain the wheel bearings and cv joint and rubber boot or am I being totally thick, he may as well replace the comple unit rather than messing about ??

Driveshaft should be complete and ready to fit, wheel bearing is separate but probably not needed if your guy agrees its a cv. Its a cleaner and more straight forward job to replace the driveshaft than just a cv joint

Hello and welcome:)
sounds like its getting sorted ok:)

Thank you very much Brian, with regard to parts...I'm guessing original Land Rover parts will be the best but obviously thats reflected in the price...I've often read that "Britpart" is "Sh!tpart" so what do people recommend as middle of the road ? I've looked Bearmach, John Craddock, LR Parts and JGS4x4.

I don't go "off-road" and do less than 8000 miles per year. The car is a reliable all weather mobile kennel.....;)

Any comments or thought would be most welcome.

Many thanks & kind regards,

I think you will find why the fuss over Brit part :
1 genuine part from sources cost more, but you will know it like for like as would be from production line.
2 patent sources can be returned and repair with original parts and sellers of quality parts.
When items become to old mass manufacturing the patent is sold on to third parties without measure of grade on material could be scrap but repairable or metal grade different. Say brass screw is now steel or aluminium due to mass cost.
Like a guarantee for 10 years on the metal part sold can be made cheaper grade metal.
Steel aluminium copper tin has international grading from various countries when sold on the market.

Car's need repairs from time to time. When bills get too high it's time to move on sometimes. There's lots of Freelander 1's still on the road even though they stopped making them 15 years ago. If the rest of the car is still in good working order then I would keep it if it were mine. Keep up the servicing and ask for help and advice in the Freelander section below.

I know, as the owner of a "proper" Land Rover (or two) I shouldn't say this, but it's pretty impressive that it's been so little trouble with 150k on the clock.

Like others, I'd use anything but Britpart. I'd even use Britpart for anything where the part failing prematurely wouldn't cause real issues. Stickers and the like!

Thank you for the warm welcome….the car is all fixed, serviced and MOT’d and I’m in love with the car again So grateful for everyone’s help, support and suggestions xx I’m quite proud to say that despite being an intensive care nurse I find it relaxing doing the odd jobs on the car….To some of you seasoned Land Rover Owners this probably sounds pathetic but I was bursting with pride when I changed the hoses !!! 433E5C0C-D811-4B07-9B90-1965E3E3D38C.jpeg 6AE0017F-9BAD-4972-B918-50AE7168EA04.jpeg

If you can handle the plumbing and wiring in people, cars should be a doddle!

An old school, all mechanical grip, offroad beast type Landie. Some people don't think Freelanders are real Landies, though really they're just made for a different type of owner.

Oh I see….boys and toys…..sounds about right ha ha !!! The freelander definitely suits me, plenty of room for the dogs and shopping and it makes me feel safe with all the divvys on the road xx
