What are these rubber things for on my springs?

Cleaning up rear springs today and found these rubber rings around one coil of each spring.
Any one know what they are for please?
Also, does it matter which way up the springs are fitted, they had tighter coil to top on Disco? :)

Are they Helpers? They are used by caravanists usually to help with the added weight with the house on the back.

No, they are just a thin rubber cover that was fitted around the second coil of the spring, I thought it was a layer of old paint that was coming off when I steam cleaned them :)

Looked at picture, not helpers but as said earlier they look like they should be at one end to stop noise between axle to chassis? Maybe PO wasn't sure either and moved them up too far??

They are like a thin sleeve that fits snuggly around one coil of the spring, only as thick as an inner tube:)

They are to stop damage to the protective coating on the spring now special ! They will be after market springs

The name is in the LR description, Isolator - Spring Seat Upper ANR3060

All standard stuff fitted to a disco and Defender by the factory.

Not one of these.....

That makes sense because the dabs of paint were under the rubber, (yellow and red)
Any idea what those colours mean on a Disco 1 please:)

Your pic shows ANR3060 the style may depend on VIN.
Isolator - Spring Seat - Upper - Genuine Land Rover at www.rimmerbros.co.uk

Progressive springs have the coils closer together at the bottom.

They are not isolator rubbers, they are like bicycle inner tubes slit open and they slip on to one coil of the spring like a protector:)

Edit... should have looked at your link.. they are called isolator rubbers but would not last long on the top coil as they would wear away! these were on about the third coil down I think and had been there for years covering the colour code up

That's correct, they rap around the top coil and isolate metal to metal contact.

Mine were not on top. Cant see how they would survive as an isolator they are so thin, I'm going to use the proper thick ones on mine :)

When my RR springs were replaced the isolators remained with the old spring, they went back metal to metal without any issues, and that's how it stayed for the remaining two years and 15000miles untill I sold it.

That the last time I've look at springs but I wonder if the spring will still locate if any thing thicker is on to of the spring, maybe, maybe not.

Reviving an old thread here...

Found these in the shed... I think they're off a Disco 1... if anyone can help identify them?

Looks like Red/Red/Pink colour code - anyone know the specs for this spring?

Also the hard rubber inserts - are these the 'helpers' you referred to?... where they an aftermarket fitment? a way to get around non-progressive springs?

Link to spring chart. Obviously only helps with standard genuine springs, or Old Man Emu.
I can't actually see the colour bands on those, but assume they are visible to the naked eye.

Forgot. Never seen the rubber inserts before, although I have looked at many springs.
So can't really comment on those.

Thanks Turbo

Nothing listed for Red/Red/Pink... but possibly the NTC5527/Disco V8 rear - which does sound familiar.

Any idea what the rubber inserts are?

Not the foggiest. I posted again^^^^^^, because I forgot the inserts first time around.

I did notice that Red/Pink are V8 Disco rear. If that is the case, it could be like they say, some kind of stiffener for when the springs get pushed down when pulling away with a trailer on. But that is purely a guess, I have never seen them before.

One thing I can say from experience is that the colour marks are very roughly applied, looks like somebody with a small brush and several pots of paint open, in a hurry to get on.
So it could be that the extra red on your springs is just a mistake.
