Could be as simples as an iffy inhibit/interlock circuit, not seeing that the foot brake was pressed when u wish to move from P, so switch/wiring maybe or ECU…if one is involved.
Or not so simples an iffy gearbox part.
Plus expect an expensive invoice, unless u have a warranty on the vehicle.

I'm kinda hoping that it's just a replacement one of them. Rather than anything gearbox related it's a 16 plate with 5 years LR service history had its major 5 year service in March. Worked absolutely fine priot to it happening. No tell tells what soever just jumped back in fired her up and when to twist it to drive and nothing solid all brake lights working all lights working around rotary gear selector. So fingers crossed an easy fix

So it a wait and see LR main dealer, I’m surprise they have kept your vehicle for so long and not communicated on what the issue, then asked your permission to go ahead with a repair. :(
Got recovered to them last Monday can't even look at it till tomorrow. over a week and they couldn't get it in to look at it. So find out tomorrow what they say it is

If it’s anything like my wife’s 2010 BMW X5, I had to remove the shift control module, unplug it, clean the contacts with electric cleaner, let it dry, plug it back it and voila! It went back into gear.
It’s been working great for 2 years now.
Good Luck!
