So I've decided to go for a full restoration on my v8 90
I've taken the body back to bare metal and need to know what to use
Can anyone recommend a good primer for painting the body
Many thanks in advance

+1 for Paintman, their enamel paints are very good and have full Land Rover colour range. For base primer use Upol 8 Acid Etch, available in both tins and spray cans. I've used this for many years, it always gives an excellent finish and have never had a reaction with other primers/paints. If using an enamel you'll need to lay an enamel primer over an acid etch primer. Paintman have a clear paint process here https://paintman.co.uk/the-simple-painting-guide/ , but I leave out the undercoat/filler/highbuild :.
  1. acid etch
  2. enamel primer
  3. top coat enamel
Spraying top coat is much less hassle than rollering and you'll get a better finish straight out of the gun.

I used the paintman roller on etch primer. I thought it was very good, but also used the Upop acid 8 etch. I didn’t think that was very good and just peeled off some new alloy parts from YRM. I cleaned every panel with Acetone, so don’t think it was due to any contamination.

Fantastic information thanks,
So I was going to brush the primer on , but do you think it's better to spray it on
Also acid etch you say is it safe for a novice to use
Thanks

Spraying always gives a better finish than brush or roller the downside is that you have less control over where the paint settles so neeed to mask up more.
Acid Etch doesn't effect you, it's no more dangerous than any other solvent based spray paint.

@V8 90 , just to help along here
  1. any primer that 'peels' is due to parent metal needing a good even key [scuff up with DA and 600 grade], then wipe back with degreaser until spotlessly clean
  2. if you've not sprayed before go buy an Apollo 1200 HVLP electrical turbine sprayer - they're very good and paintshop quality finish can be obtained with a little practice + choose the right gun needle size + can spray all types of primers and paints
  3. re' masking - don't worry about this, just mask up panels [if needed] properly, it's just part of best practice prep'
  4. re' degreasing - once degreased take a heat gun to lightly 'finish off' wet solvent removal - this also ensure no solvent left in seams of any panel
  5. re' safety masks - irrespective of 1k or 2k [with isocyantes!!] use Gerson 2k disposable masks - they will ensure near zero risk of solvent/paint fume inhalation. Do not spray without using a good quality mask [throw away paper type masks are absolutely no good!!] https://www.nuagane.co.uk/gerson-2k...ace-mask-not-air-fed-mask-car-paint-940-p.asp + https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/10034034083
Note on safety - walk away from anyone who says just spray without a proper twin safety mask, it's your health + do wear full UVEX type full safety goggles + can recommend wearing disposable hooded overalls for comfort. Good luck
