What on earth could this be?
Freelander td4 02
Engine starts & runs fine ...... for the first mile. Then there's a severe loss of power. It won't then go over 50mph?? Changing gear there's a thump, sounds as if from diff.
Sick fed up.
I've changed all hoses that have anything to do with turbo including vacuum.
Changed the turbo solenoid & the actuator which was professionally set.
I'm not a guy with loads of cash. I'm retired. I like doing what I can myself however long it takes.
Someone tell me I'm not the only person to go through this & how they fixed it?
Thanks

The clunk could be the bushes on the diff one on each side and one at The back , their easy to change up in the air but a bit fiddley on the ground you don't have to take the diff off

Regarding lack of power have a look at the pipes coming of the vacuum selonoid at the front under air intake they are prone to melt and split you also might be needing a new low pressure sensor on the end of the rail that's the cheapest option

That was the first thing I did. I changed all the rubber under the bonnet. The first air intake pipe coming up from left of radiator (looking at car front to back) had a deep rub where it was touching the the intake mounting but it wasn't worn through. I cut a bit from the old pipe, glueing it onto the new at that point just to protect against contact & I rounded off the square edge of the intake screw mount.
When I stop the engine I can pull one of the hoses you mention off and I can clearly hear air escaping ... so I thought it must be holding vacuum. The code the garage got, I was informed meant the actuator was kaput. That took some changing in situ I can tell you, but I put the locking nut @ same position on the new actuator as was on old & had my fingers crossed. Yet no difference. The car starts and runs fine first half mile or so (no clunk's from back end) and then loses power & when changing gear, clunking starts.
When I bought the motor 3 years ago, the prop shaft was off because the diff was knackered. A reconditioned one was put on with new mounts & bushes & I replaced the prop shaft with again, a reconditioned one. I still have the old prop shaft in a corner of my shed. It ran fine, no problems for a bit (nearly 2yrs) before I needed to change the clutch (a story in itself) which got me on the local news & in the local press.
I appreciate all the help I can get on this one, thanks for reading.
Doogie

Don't know if it's relevant but maybe worth a check, I had an issue once with step-daughters car (small petrol, nothing like a freelander td4). Would start and run fine for a short while, then suffered with massive loss of power, hesitation etc. Took me a while to sort it but turns out she'd gone through quite a few puddles and the air filter was saturated with water and heavy. Replaced that and it was back to how it should have been.

Thanks, but I did already check. I've not been wading in it, I just use it as a road car & for towng my caravan. Worst its been off road is on a forestry commission trail, just a compact gravel road.
Thank you for your time anyway, I much appreciate it.

Is the code a new code or old stored code?
Could be sign of failing crank position sensor.
Can you get live data of fuel pressure and see if it drops.
