200tdi turbo cartridge

Hey guys,

I’ve read most of the topics on this subject but a lot of the links are out of date so thought I’d make a new post.

I’m after a new cartridge to rebuild my defender 200tdi turbo. Not after anything more then just bog standard unit.

Anyone know the current cheapest place to find one? Chinese is fine as just need it back on the road for as little as possible

Probably not best to go for the cheapest + you'll need new gaskets too. Note you're in Hampshire, can really recommend Turbo Dynamics...they offer a first rate rebuild service https://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/

A lot of the cheaper ones seem to be 300tdi, assuming these won’t fit the 200tdi turbo

I’ve contacted turbo dynamics for a quote but I believe will work out cheaper to buy the cartridge and fit myself

No I put in the details for a Discovery 200tdi 1990 and it said it was Compatible

I see you are a 200tdi defender but should be the same, and if you check the archives you will find
People who have used the 300tdi turbo units on the 200tdi engine,

Just had my turbo for a 19J overhauled by Cats and Carbs. Very helpful and actually did what they said in the time they said.....very unusual now a days! And 2 year warranty. They sent their courier to pick it up and the same for bringing it back.

If you want really cheap then you can get a seal kit off Ebay for around £50.

What is wrong with your unit?

Whines when under load and damage to the fins

It will cost you nothing to speak to Cats and Carbs....Google for details.

I believe fitting a turbo cartridge myself will work out quite abit cheaper then sending it off to be rebuilt

Ive just completed a core rebuild on my 200tdi with a hybrid from "turbo rebuild ltd"

Other than 3 out of 4 bolts into the housing sheared off - simple job and very nice upgrade for £200

I bought one of ones of eBay. Listed as fitting 200tdi. But it didn’t. They must be a 300 fit. The veins were a different shape and hit the housing by quite a bit really. I ended up marking it up with blue , and put it in the lathe and turned it out Then the oil return was a different fitting to. So got a 300 one. The ends are right but they are to long. So I made a one out the both of them. Runs up and seems ok. But I’m on with my build so it hasn’t been run properly. More chew than it’s worth really
