l322 Gearbox Failure?

05 TD6 Vogue.

I was driving tonight when it felt like the car went into neutral.

No warnings nor unusual noises.

I tried manual and sport as I coasted to a halt, but still like the car was in neutral.

I turned the engine off, restarted and engaged drive, but nothing happened except the car revved when I depressed the accelerator. Same with reverse.

Before I switched off, a sound from under the car started, sounding like grating gears.

The car is in its way to the garage.

Is this likely to be the gearbox or front diff or something else?

Thanks for any pointers.
 
An oil pan drop and examination of the contents of it will tell a lot. Any metal flakes and it's rebuild time. Hopefully not the case but it is a common issue...
 
Best bet it to also pull the old filter apart and check in there, any particulates in the pan may be only a fraction of whats floating around.....

Unfortunately complete failure of the TD6 box is very common, fingers crossed though!
 
Before I switched off, a sound from under the car started, sounding like grating gears.
If the drivetrain downstream of the transmission output shaft is disconnected from the wheels somewhere down the line (transfer box, propshafts, final drives or driveshafts), when the shift lever is moved back to the Park position the output shaft is still turning and this causes the park lock pawl to ratchet over the teeth creating a noise like ‘grating gears’.

So, it could be a failed output shaft spline, the transfer box in neutral, the front propshaft spline (in the unlikely event that the car hasn’t been through the Q041 Service Action) or a driveshaft popped out.

Worth getting the car on the highest suspension setting and asking someone to (safely) look underneath to see if either propshaft is turning while the vehicle is stationary in Drive.

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried this a couple of times, but as a rattling noise developed, I thought it best to turn off the engine and look online for answers.
Might have stuck between hi n low :eek:,have you tried the low box ;)..

Excuse the delay in updating you, it's taken some time for the repairs to be cometed.

The gearbox had a full rebuild 18 months ago. When it went pop this time, the oil pump disintegrated in the gearbox. The reason this happened was that the specialist gearbox garage (who'd done the rebuild) hadn't put a thrust washer between the oil pump and the main casing, so the oil pump ground itself against the casing before destroying itself.

The company I bought the range rover from paid another specialist gear box company to completely rebuild it. £2200.

Bear in mind it's an '05 car with 351,000 km on the clock.

So amazing service from them.
