Morning after - stone cold. I don't open a hot system, seen pictures of what happens on a first aid course years ago.
It foamed as it came out, which is why I was worried about head gasket maybe, but hasn't shown any signs of bubbles or foaming before, so I presume just pressure release like opening a shaken coke bottle. And no signs of bubbles / foaming as I ran it up to temperature with the cap off after either.
It was almost as if it was pressurised from somewhere else with an airlock which had pushed the coolant up into the header tank and kept it there. But I can't see from the diagrams and my understanding of coolant systems how it could do that. Air rises, so should logically trap at the header tank, or thermostat, or top of radiator. And no sign of any problem with that previously.
Fingers crossed for you

I believe some members raise the front end of the car when filling the cooling system to aid airlock removal.from the antic's of your heater it sounds like you had one.;)

Rsw iv not used it myself.

Everything i own and 85% of what i work on is bmw somehow so a cheep engine scanner. Bmw Inpa. Delphi and a snapon gets me by
Inpa works with everything to do with a td6 2003 vogue. Sometimes the abs module takes 2 or 8 attempts to get into or just randomly clears the fault.
It will fully function with 2002 to 2005 diesels including air suspension.
Yes its a bit on a budget for a laptop software yes its a pain having to translate from german at times.
But it will do everything needed for gold rover.

I will apologise for late replying. Trying to get customers cars done. The day job, and my skid car ready for weekend event and not sitting down much.
Thanks for this. :) The German isn't an issue :)
Just to clarify BMW Inpa will do everything with L322 , 2002, diesel, L322.
Sorry to ask , but it has been so difficult to find one system that suits my particular model, with it's non-obd2 compliant peculiarities.

@gstuart we may have a winner.

Since i sorted mine out I've never had a problem.
I find the best way is to give it the kiss of life... When the expansion tank isn't draining into the rest of the system, finger over the over flow, blow down the neck, sorts it right out, followed by squeezing the top hose, finger over the little hole in the neck, release squeeze on the top hose, repeat a few times to get all the air out, then should be able to continue to fill

Cheers guys. Should be able to park quite a steep upslope in a while, so will give it a mixture of that and @kermit_rr 's suggestion to try and get it fully bled. Perils of hot weather - you don't find the heater is glitchy until later. Just seems odd that there wasn't any sort of sign earlier even though we'd done 20+ mile drives in stinking temperatures and even with this no sign of a temperature glitch. Still, better the heater than the motor or rad as the site of a problem....

Do you have the book symbol on the display? If not then I'd say unlikely that you have a blend motor problem. Can you select LO and Hi on both sides?

.
my one is a 52 plate, normally use my mates workshop reader but got the inpa software and lead to try it, does work well apart from needing google translate some times, but dont try adjusting the entertainment system with it, has a habit of deleting the satnav system

Book symbol, but assumed that was down to the broken aircon side. Both sides adjust to hi and lo, and values between, outside temp displayed. Fans seem to wind up and down randomly, usually faster at higher speed. Think the whole system, like a lot on the car, has suffered quite a bit of neglect and standing and sulky as a result.

I have no book symbol and a missing condenser so ac deffo not working. Book symbol generally comes on because of either blend motors, distribution or recirc motors. I recently unplugged the heated screen relays and that brought the book symbol up, went away when i put them back in

Bit late to the party but according to the gap iid site, it will do everything you want on android phone/tablet via Bluetooth.
https://www.gap-diagnostic.com/products/iidtool/

If you put 2002 range rover in it gives you a table saying what it can do.
Guess who has one for sale!

This is what I mean about tail chasing. @stustrong says it does . Now you're saying , 'nope only foxwell'.
This is why it's taken 11yrs View attachment 241348

Addit: from Foxwell site , "Designed for Jaguar and Land Rover cars from around 1999 onwards (models with a 16-pin OBD-II type diagnostic socket)" . Does that mean OBD2 compliant, or just the socket is that type?

Socket is that type. kds might be right on AllComms as I doubt Storey sees many oil burners in the US. The petrol probably just uses the standard OBD2 codes for the engine.

I have bluetooth thingy that connects to my Android phone using Torque. It is excellent but doesn't do the P38 diesel and not sure if it would do yours. Many companies went a bit early depending on their market.

I have used INPA for my 5 series, if it works as well for you as it does for me then it would be a clear winner. I dont think there would be anything else that works on a 98 rear air suspension and no OBD socket.
Plus its the cheapest (cant get cheaper than free) I got my lead from https://www.cable-shack.co.uk/ and he gives you a link for a load of software and good instructions to make it all work

I had an Omega that kept boiling over. Smelt odd. Turned out the previous owner topped it up at the local garage ... using screenwash! Flushed it out and replaced with new and that solved it.

It will speak too.
Engine
Abs (when it decides only thing that has a hicup at times)
Air suspension
Light models
Seat modules
Sat nav
Radio
Immobiliser
Air suspension
Windows
Alarm
Heaters and air conditioning.
Airbag
Main body module
Gearbox
Steering wheel

Basically anything electric is module controlled it will speak too it.

It will read active and shadow faults. Reset adaptions manual system tests. Calibrate air suspension
And in depth live data.

The software works with the older obd1 bmw range too.

How come yours isnt obd2 compliment? It does have the normal diagnostic connector or what has it got?
Iv never even thought about an l322 being non obd complaint.
Mines a 2003 and everything does as it should a cheep Chinese scanner reads the engine.
Its been plugged into a 02 plate 4.4 i was considering buying.

To get it to speak too the rr you have to say its an x5

Its also been plugged in and confirmed working on a 2000 plate x5 which shares 90% of the same modules and ecus.

All the 2002-2005 RR have all the same k line and obd2 connecter pin outs.

2003 it was compulsory for motors to be obd2 compliment but that doesn't mean it wasn't used earlier such as this case.

No idea why not. The early one's just aren't. It would take a more clued up, on the technical ins and outs , and peculiarities of L322 than I, to possibly give an answer. The socket is physically compatible, but not electronically compliant. I believe the issue lies with the ECUs.
The more I search, the more I see this issue has been discussed before, with the same tail chasing results :(
