I"m hoping to change my Freelander Serengeti 2003 for either a 2007 or a 2008 Freelander 2 but I"m also looking at a 2006 low mileage Freelander Freestyle. All of them Automatics
.Now this is where I have a problem. The 2006 TD4 Auto Freestyle Freelander TAX is £585 per annum Does anyone know Why it is more than the Freelander 2 TD4 GS Autos which are £340 per annum.
And am I right in thinking that the Freelander 2 is no longer Chain driven? and what are the pros and cons of buying either a Mark 1 Facelift or the just one year younger Freelander 2?
I would appreciate your thougths. I need to make a decision before July 9th.

The last of Freelander 1s were expensive to tax, as they had high emissions, hence the higher price.

You can't compare the FL1 with the FL2, as they are completely different vehicles, having origins from different manufacturers, from completely different eras.

The FL1 is slow, small, basic and unrefined by comparison to the much more modern and complicated FL2.

The FL1 is on the whole is cheaper to repair by comparison to the more complex and expensive FL2.

Both have their good and bad points, but there's no denying, that the FL2 is a superior vehicle all round.

I'd go for a 2009 MY FL1, which has the later and stronger Haldex Gen4 coupling, as well as a few minor changes, which overcome some earlier year issues.

Be aware that the FL2 can go wrong (mainly drive line related), which can be expensive to repair, the electronics can also give trouble, but on the whole, the FL2 is a more reliable vehicle than the FL1.

Nodge you just shot your own foot reread the reliable bit for F1 and F2.
 
Well I think that makes my mind up except the question about the Cambelt. Chain or not and I"m not sure what a Haldex Gen4 Coupling is?

Timing belt, which is changed at 10 years or 150k miles for that age of FL2.

The Haldex coupling is an electromechanical equivalent of the FL1 VCU. The Gen 4 is stronger, but wasn't fitted until the 09 MY FL2, along with some other minor improvements.
The later Gen4 coupling is fitted to all FL2s after chassis number suffix
9H000001, which 9H designates a 2009 Model Year.
This was the model year I specifically wanted, as it's a more reliable system.

Hope I haven`t hijacked this thread but I was wondering whether anyone could confirm the details given in this advert (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174816772586?hash=item28b3e441ea:g:GzoAAOSwhqhg10sM)

The sentence commencing fifth line down in this advert states the Td4 S doesn`t have the Haldex system, is this accurate? if so might help people decide which model to go for. ;)

I have the same year and model freelander 2 it has a haldex its just been seviced

Only the 2 WD (yes they made a Front Wheel Drive only) FL2 doesn't have the Haldex (called "e" TD4 IIRC).

However the S while having the Haldex and so part time 4WD, it doesn't have the Terrain Response so misses out on the special programmes, which is what makes it so good on and off road.

The SE is the best all round spec to get (that's what I have), without getting into over priced HSE money. The SE is missing just 3 key items the HSE gets, all of which can be retrofitted later if needed.

It does say its the basic one, but it does have a Haldex, as all AWD FL2's do.
It'll have basic HDC (fixed speed decent) and TC, but like I said, it doesn't have Terrain Response, so you can't lock it in permanent 4X4, like you can with the TR equipped models.
It's also pretty basic inside, with no heated seats, climate control, cruise control, steering wheel audio controls, and only a basic stereo without sat nav. Price seems about right, but keep in mind I paid £2k for my SE, although I did have to fix the engine, then rebuild the rear diff, and replaced all the brakes, but I've managed to get mine on the road for just over £3k + my time, so I'm more than happy with that, considering it's pretty much immaculate inside and out, and has only 120k on the clock.

I saw that too, the link took me to the AirGunForum, unfortunately I needed to join their forum to access the photos in full screen mode.

Probably a bit too soon anyway, however if the price is right it might be worth investigating and asking a few more questions about the maintenance. What sort of mileage are these engines good for ?

The bottom end is pretty much indestructible.
My rod bearings (big ends) showed absolutely zero wear at 119600 miles, and that was after the piston had pounded on a nut for 100 miles.

The top end isn't so long lived, requiring a rebuild every 200k miles or so.
