Hi there,

I am a newbee to this forum so please be gentle.

I have an elderly P38 that has developed a fault with the drivers door window in that it is refusing to go down (I don't know about "up" yet). I have tried refurbishing the centre console switch pack and, although all other windows are behaving themselves, the drivers door window is still refusing to join in.

When I operate the window switch (in either direction) I can hear a faint but distinct "click" from inside the drivers door, suggesting some sort of relay problem.

The question is, are there relays involved with the movement of the windows and, if so, where about inside the door will I find them.

All offers of advice will be gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Stephen N.

Inside the door is an outstation all the electric inputs to the various speakers and switches go through it, that would be the first place to look, i believe the inputs to it are negative voltage.

I've got a vague memory they're driven from relays on the BECM. Clicking sounds like power is being granted but the motor has seized. Or possibly the mechanism.

Check the mechanism and frame it all fits in. I recently had similar problem and there are just 3 rivets that hold all the frame in place. Over time these had come out and jammed the glass from moving. With careful jiggling was able to lift frame into place and fit self tappers into rivet holes. Touch wood been a good un so far

The front windows do not have a relay in BECM. The outstation does the switching. The signalling is from BECM using Pins 3,13,14,15. These are Data Lines not 12V switching. The same wires are used for the central locking signals as well.
  1. Check state of the connectors on the outstation for corrosion (there's plenty of moisture inside the doors).
  2. Check state of C302 on door jam.
  3. As suggested above, check the mechanism is not jammed & stalling the motor.
  4. Swap outstation from Left Door. They are identical so you can confirm if that's the issue or not.
