P38A EAS, WHAT ELSE....AGAIN

'Allo, folks.

After all the fantastic help I received recently in creating a fully functioning EAS in my P38, I hesitate to raise anything concerned with that particular issue but....There's always a but isn't there ?

I had completely forgotten that along the tortuous route to a suspension that works, I had replaced, amongst almost everything else, the R.H. FRONT height sensor. I only now remember that in taking the old one out I came across a crumbly flat plate which fell to pieces in my hands. It didn't look very significant in its then state, so it could not have been very functional.

Wise men hereabouts will know, as I later found out, that this piece of tat was some sort of heat shield. The RHF sensor is the only one that is a bit close to some hot bits. So, should I go looking for a replacement heat shield, fabricate a new one out of a bit of copper sheet or some asbestos, both of which I probably have in my junk department or can I safely forget about it 'til the sensor itself spontaneously combusts ?

I think they are more important on a v8 mine came off years ago i keep meaning to bend up some ally but not had any problems with out them one day i might if i am bored

That's reassuring. I'd just love to have a day with enough time in which to get bored.
Just as a matter of interest I looked up engines for DSE's. Hadn't realised that they were 6-cylinder Beemers, not 8's. Does that mean that the exhaust pipe(s) don't glow red in the dark ?
All I need now is a pattern, template or dimensions for a heat shield. Haven't seen one for sale that I could copy, anywhere.

I don't know why I couldn't find details before, but I've just googled the subject. Any number of pictures.

Looks a lot more complicated than necessary, if indeed it IS necessary. I referred to the RH sensor being the only one on the car that was near anything hot. I am reliably informed that my engine is something called a V8 (gosh) and that most of them tend to have exhaust pipes emerging from BOTH banks of cylinders. So a different shield must be manufactured for each side. Must have been down to the fact that there was no such thing on the left side of my engine. Must have been long gone.
All the pictures I have now found show something that looks like bent cardboard, covered in cooking foil, so that should be easy to make ! Or perhaps I could just wrap the whole shooting match in crumpled foil and save on screws. Answers on a postcard please, then I could use that instead. Sneaky, huh ?

From memory they push onto some studs and are held in place by shock-washers. Stops the BECM cooking too.

I managed to salvage my old one and personally I would fabricate something ceramic. If they went to the extra expense on something no-one will ever see I suspect it is there for a reason, especially if you have a v8 chucking out a lot of heat.

Sorry to labour the point but has any member any experience of height sensor heat shields on a P38., particularly on V8's with their glow-in-the-dark exhaust pipes ? Should I replace them immediately or risk cooking something expensive ? Has anyone replaced or ignored ? Has anyone even made their own lash-up ? Sorry, of course I meant to say, hand-made craftsman-fabricated better than new replacement ?

Have you thought of wrapping the exhaust with asbestos rope in the vicinity of the sensors?
