Hello all.
Changed the cv boot on the drivers side today. The drive shaft slipped out of the gearbox end, but managed to get it back in. Re_ assembled it all and torque the hub nut etc. The problem I have is when going through the gears the gear stick vibrates and wobbles, as does the transmission. At 30mph very noticeable. Re, checked and not see anything out of order. Any help on this very welcome. Really need the car at the moment. Thanks in advance.
Cheers all.

Did the CV come out the gearbox enough to loose the box oil?
If so, are you 100% sure the joint went back in properly, snapping back in fully?

No not sure. So. Can I achieve this without a total strip down? My idea having read your post, was undo the hub nut and lightly give the shaft a go with air punch to settle it in. Open to suggestions. Thanks.

No!
The shaft has cv joints on the inner and outer. You will collapse the shaft and not put the impact in the right place and probs damage the joints in the process.

Simply get underneath, put a small block of wood against the outer edge of the inner joint and give it a sharp tap.
You will feel if the joint is not locked into the gearbox by grabbing the inner joint and pulling it. Mind you don't get oil in your eyes if it comes out!!

Also, as above, check for oil leaks and the gearbox oil level when happy all is good.

Grab and feel the inner boot, the boot nearest the gearbox. If it feels loose, wiggle and align then apply a sharp blow to the outside face of this inside joint with a block of wood and a hammer.
Take care not to pinch or damage the rubber boot.
If the joint moves towards the gearbox then you have found your problem!!

Then check oil level.

Hello all.
No success I'm afraid. The shaft has not come out of the box, so no loss of oil. So I stripped it down and the shaft will just move in and out, but not stay put. Had a feel of the inner boot and theres some bits in there moving around. I take the inner cv joint has come apart. Luckily I'm off Work tomorrow, so have chance to get it put right. My thinking is to just replace the whole shaft with a new one. No other choice. Would welcome your thoughts on it before going forward. Also, need to done tomorrow, I know the footy is on but really value your time on this when you can. Cheers all.

Just to be sure here - you talk about drivers side and the shaft going into the gearbox? Is this a LHD car because in a RHD the shaft goes to the IRD - I presume you do mean the IRD.

Whether there is a fault with the CV or not will not stop the drive shaft locking into the gearbox/IRD.

On the end of the drive shaft - the very end bit that pokes into the IRD or gearbox - there should be a round clip (circlip?) Is there one? If not I don't think the shaft will stay in place.

If there is, (and I think they say to replace them if you remove the shaft but I never have) then it should just clip into place. I'm sure I have just pushed them in before, and I ain't no Arnie, but I may have, as said, giver the wide bit that pokes out of the IRD/gearbox some encouragement with the #1 tool (with protective wooden piece of course ).

I've found them a lot easier to get in than out.

This is the clip I was talking about (its not a Freelander shaft by the way)...

Sorry, it is the right hand, drivers side. As I say, the shaft will move in and out and the bits in CV boot are loose. I have not dis, assembled the inner joint. Thanks for your time.
Gary.

You mean it will move in and out of the IRD? Its not locking into place? Does it have the clip on the end of the drive shaft?

With the loose bits in the CV, I've never actually stripped a CV joint (have rebuilt UJs in the days when cars broke down every 5 minutes), I'm not really sure what they could be. I didn't think there were any floaty around bits in a Freelander CV, the 'moving bits' are bearings fixed to the shaft - unless the clip that holds them on has come off. But I'm not expert.

Is it the CV joint itself that is moving in and out or the drive shaft moving in and out of the IRD?

The shaft its self does not seem to be moving in and out of the yard, as there is no oil loss. Also, when trying to turn the shaft it feels locked in. It's just that by you pull it in and out, and the inner boot will extend. Cheers.

Don't go by me - but I think that's normal. They have to be able to move in and out as the suspension shifts when you're driving.

What's the one on the other side like? Bearing in mind it'll have old grease & boot so may feel a bit different.

Sounds like the roller bearings in the tripod joint have come out.
It looks like this, and it's possible to reassemble the joint correctly.

I hope you're not as daft as me.
One time I was changing a boot and decided to clean everything thoroughly which was fine but when putting the new grease into the boot I didn't put it over the bearings. I assumed the grease would end up on the bearings when the boot went back on but apparently not and after a few miles they failed. :(
I had an issue similar to yours.

Hello ALL.
As it goes, I opted for a complete new drive shaft. going to do a full synopsis on the old one. On the plus side, the new one hasn't got the click, click, click, and odd steering feel on left turn. So, all is good.
I forget the old Girl is almost 18yrs old. still starts on the button, summer or winter.
Thanks as ever.
Cheers.

Hello all.
Sorry for not mentioning the left hand lock noise.
Opened the inner boot CV with a Stanley knife and one of the three rollers had come apart. Did I cause this while setting out to do the original job? Or was the joint passed its best? The lube in the joint was of a watery sludge in nature,
Thanks for your replies, and sorry for not giving the best of back ground to work with. Lesson learned.
Cheers all.
