after being stood on the drive for a while, I took this vehicle out for a trial, there was a rotating noise
from the front left wheel area. anyone got any ideas.

that's a pretty vague description, you say you went out for a trial, what do you mean, ie giving the vehicle a little run, or have you been off roading. Rotating noise could be anything from tyres, ie do they need pumping up, if the vehicle has been left for any length of time it could mean the tyres have lost air thus giving more noise from the tyres. If you have been off roading then a stone could be lodge in the calliper that gives more of a grating nose but still rotating in its sound, it could be the wheel bearing beginning to go, that gives a deep rumble to begin with developing (if not dealt with) to some one shovelling a wheelbarrow of gravel into your wheels. Could even be loose wheel nuts, the list is endless, well not endless but without hearing it for ourselves pretty hard to pin point from the luxury of our armchairs.

just took it out onto the road, with this noise i didn't take it any further. tyre press ok. wheel has been off & calliper checked. checked wheel brg before taking wheel off.
noise wasn't there before putting vehicle on drive. had pads out & they are ok. checked disc is secure. when going in straight line no noise, only when turning either direction.

nodge68.......
the discs are slightly rusty. this noise is only on left side. i did a short test with the pads out (brake line clamped).

How's the backplate? It's not uncommon for them to disintegrate, and rub against the rear of the rotor.
