Hi all,

My disco 1 200tdi, is starting to form rust at the bottom of the B Pillars, it's visible and looks pretty bad, is this an MOT failure?

Instead of welding a plate, could I use a plate and cold weld say 2mm thick steel to patch the holes? As this provides no structural support would this be an issue?

Thanks

Explain cold weld? It is structural and would to be welded Mig/gas to effect a good repair,
Check the drain hole is clear, repair panels are available and is probably the easiest way to go,

Cold weld, is essentially just plating with a 'wedl stick' and a heat gun to melt the rod, more like soldering than anything - it's in an awkward area.

Europa, you are saying it's structural? I thought the body didn't depend on the B pillars for integrity some say MOT testers care, some do not.

If spotted by the tester it would be a fail, I would weld it properly, take back door off, it’s heavy but simple to remove,
Take out carpet and underlay that side, unbolt seatbelt inertia reel and B pillar trim and it’s quite accessible,
You may have to remove the plastic outer sill to give you more access but that’s easy to do,

Might have to get someone to weld it up then, I have a welder but don't trust myself if this is structural.

What thickness of steel do you think should be required?

Thanks

I’d check the inside and worry about that more then the outer. The bottom little angled bit is a finisher really. Inside has a bit of ‘u’ frame angle which is spot welded to both the floor and the box of the pillar. If the outer has rotted I’d bet the inner is going too. Look at the bottom of the inside where the box and ‘u’ joins the sill

If the rust is within 12" of the seatbelt mount it ought to be a fail. Can't remember exactly how the lower one is mounted on a D1.
At least that used to be the rule. Maybe that has changed. But I'd worry about that more.
Just saying.

cheers flossie, 1.2mm ordered.

Will check that resto, thanks for the advice.

@Standly, I thought the same, it's tbh no where near the seatbelt mounting so can't really see it as an issue.
