After a little advice please; I have my transfer box apart currently, before I put it back together could someone just confirm that the speedo drive just runs freely on the shaft and isn’t actually pegged or anything? This is how it seems on mine but that seems a bit strange as it seems free to slip?

Take your time doing the preload, its makes a big difference to how the output shaft runs. If there's not enough the pre-load disappears when the box gets hot and expands and this lets the shaft wobble which causes the oil seal to pass oil into eh transmission brake.
