Cheers bud ... I’m stretching my knowledge now .. so apologies if this is a silly question... but if this is the case then would this suggest that it fires initially on number 4 when timed up? ...

I’m hoping to ring the diesel company tomorrow to check the injection pump and see if I can get any further along with this.
no fuel pump timing is 13 degrees btdc (marks on flywheel)compression stroke no1,as can be checked through plug in side of the pump

Latest update ... just had bod round who actually knows about engines (unlike me). It looks like my engine fires on number 4 instead of number 1. We are wondering whether this is a military quirk??? ... As a result the injection pump has been refurbished to run on number 1. This is why we feel that it isn’t starting. We are hoping to remove the timing belt and with the crank and cams locked up we hope to rotate the injection pump 180 degrees to see if that has any effect.
Has anyone had a similar issue to this.

Hi all ... I’m back with another query ... After a compression test on the Landy ... I found that three pistons were less than 150psi and one was 300psi so I’m guess that it’s no wonder that it wasn’t firing. Timing seems to be okay now. On the pistons no’s 1,3 and 4 they are stamped X27 STD whilst on no.2 piston it is stamped X39 STD. Can anyone tell me to what this refers. I’m guessing it’s the size?

Si.

if it is firing on 4 and the FIP has been apart is the FIP flange been put on correctly, as i got mine 180 out on the 200tdi pump and took me ages to work that out.

My 2.5Na i bought as a non runner just put a battery on it and yanked it down the road started within 400yds

2.5 na starts lovely normally as long as you heat it and leave teh throttle pedal alone until it fires

I had another look at the timing and was told that the timing is set on the full opening of the exhaust valve on no.1 cylinder. This seems to be the case so I think that I was led down a wrong path. I have since done a compression test and 3 pistons were less than 150psi and one being 300psi. This as I found was due to seized rings in the pistons. I was told that a good piston should be in the region of >450psi so I guess no wonder why it wasn’t firing.

Again I was led down a wrong path by the bod who was helping me due to my lack of knowledge of mechanics. They told me that piston 2 was oversize. In fact I have now had Elite Landrover in Sheffield confirm that all 4 are standard. Elite were great and so helpful. At least I’ve learnt something. I’ve now honed out the bores and awaiting the delivery of rings and bearing shells. I’m now hoping that this will solve the problem. Will need to get some new XZL tyres before it’s taken off the axle stands but seem to be moving forwards ... all but slowly.
