H6CPO strange experience l322

Bought a 3.0 diesel l322 last week for the sum of £900 been off the road since 2018 looks OK suspension inactive and needs a alternator and brake pads but when I turned up to buy it was on a carpark that the chap didn't feel comfortable with the l322 being there as it wasn't anywhere near his house he gave me no v5 he said I would have to apply for it which I have absolutely no paperwork all I had was a key and a car with a flat knackered battery I did a check before I handed out cash all OK but he seamed such a shaddy guy

What sort of check did you do?
Does the DVLA tax / MOT check tie in with it being off the road since 2018?
Have you checked the VIN?

Using the reg number H6CPO as per the thread title, the mot record shows it lost 40k miles between tests a few years ago and then shows mileage not readable for several more years.

Sounds well shady. I would have walked away tbh

I wouldn't take a car without a V5 unless it was from a lease company/auction with a valid reason for not having it!

@gazdon , golden rule when buying any car...caveat emptor!! Never part with cash/any form of payment unless V5 present, owner ID and address matches V5, MOT check reads correct [no miles lost/reduced], vehicle [type, engine number, gearbox] and VIN matches V5. Anything that doesn't look right, walk away.

Unless, you're buying the vehicle for spares...in which case, anything goes.

I've done 2 online checks with the vin number and number plate all is good not stolen or outstanding finance or right off but millage has been messed with that's for sure

What was the reason given for no v5? And what was the reason for the carpark? I'm not sure what you're saying the guy was uncomfortable with

Well the carpark was on a business estate with different companies there nice place to be fair well looked after and when I got there I asked about and no one knew nothing about the car it was just parked up in a space anyway eventually I got contact from the owner he called me and said he would be 5 minutes he turned up with his mate in a recovery truck looked really ruff and said to his mate I shouldn't of had that pint I'm still ****ed he looked like a heavy drinker anyway jump started the l322 off his truck then looked at me for payment so I said bank transfer like we agreed he said no cash I said we'll that's what we agreed anyway his mate had a bank account so I transferred the money to him soon as it was OK they went no bye or nothing I had to drive to the nearest fuel station to get fuel it had nothing init the gauge didn't even move it made it to the station I put some in with the engine running as the battery on it was knackered and drove it the 20 miles home on the bumper stops and knackered battery ohh and brake metal to metal what a scary experience but it made it home

As for the v5 I asked for it he said mate you will have to apply for it before he walked off no reason or nothing it was like your car now I've been paid bye bye lol

The dash is reading OK no lost pixels it says miles at 204931k

Well the mileage is irrelevant on a £900 old L322 Range Rover
lf it starts and runs, looks reasonable and isn't stolen, it's worth £900

Let's hope that when you apply for a V5 it isn't delivered by a Police Officer and insurance company representative.

Although if the VIN checks out, it's been off the road since 2018 and worth under £1,000 it's probably not on the wanted list.

Be careful when ordering a new log book. Yer need to use the option to change the registered keeper on said log book, then get a copy. NOT the option of just asking for a copy of the existing log book, because that will be posted to the current registered owner already on the log book.

The registered keeper on the log book isn't necessarily the owner.

There could be all sorts of history behind the vehicle. Safe or not. If it were mine... before spending anything on it... I would call the police on the non emergency 101 number and tell them you have just bought it. Seller refused to give you a v5 and drove oft. Tell them the vehicle is with you and its current location. If they're interested in it they won't necessarily tell you. They will pop round to see it. Like stolen etc. If no interest then that's good news.

It could be the owner put it in a garage and it wasn't worth the cost to fix it so said keep it or shift it. Sounds like the seller is somehow in the motor trade and planned to sell it without any come back. Keep a note of the bank number details and phone numbers used. And a copy of the advert.

looks like the previous owner bought it in 2018 but only used it for a few months if at all. tax ran out sept '18, not registered SORN and no MOT either

You were taking a big risk driving it home.
