Hi,
Just joined the forum as I am in the process of getting my 1983 2.25 series 3 back on the road this summer. So far this year I have got it starting and running smoothly, replaced the leaking clutch master and slave cylinders, fitted a new exhaust, got all the electrics working, fitted a new starter motor as old one was cooked, fitted a seat belt bar and various other odds and ends.
Everything was going along well and almost ready for the mot when I happened to leave the ignition on. Went to start, heard a little click then noticed smoke coming from around the starter solenoid. Switched off and now unable to start. Tried recharging the battery that didn't work, tried a jump lead to starter but just nasty sparks.
I can get the engine to run with the starter handle but nothing with the key apart from panel lights. I've ordered a new starter solenoid and new coil.
What else could I check or do?
I'll post some pictures of the project.

I would think a new coil and solenoid should cure it, they are about the only things on a series 3 that are energised with the ignition on if everything else is switched off. You may have ruined you battery try charging it for at least 24 hours, longer if possible.

Leaving the ignition on, usually cooks the coil ...
