If yer want a comfortable reliable land rover with go anywhere ability there's only one option. None of that messing about with hair suspension or worrying if you'll get to yer destination. Get yerself a Freelander 2. If that's a bit more complex than yer want, gerra Freelander 1 instead.I'm nearing 60 and I love my 110 to bits but cronky knees and back are taking their toll on me now
I make biodiesel and I need a more comfy bus to run around in and love landrovers so a P38 diesel seems ideal being veg oil tolerant too.
However, I'm very old skool, never really moved with the times and I've never owned a car with ECU's or anything, my 200tdi 110 is joyously simple in that respect.
I know I'll need a nanocom? From what I've picked up from reading posts and maybe a few other tools too, mechanical stuff doesn't scare me , complicated electronics and auto boxes do even though I've never owned an auto.
Maybe auto P38's are better than manuals? Is there a particular year of P38 where niggles were ironed out or indeed, where they got worse?
I want a real clean one not a project, hoping to keep it that way.
Is there a comprehensive buyer's guide anywhere, I've found vague ones which have just scared me more.

Bit iffy on bio them things, some say ok some say not, P38 will run on straight raw veg oil so my bio will seem like luxury to it.
Freelanders are a bit too girly for someone as butch as me anyway.

The 2.5 will run on any dead thing you pour into it even if only 3 cylinders work. Liquid dinosaur oil (derv) with redex they seem to like bestest. They like the dirty diesel not this refined B7 stuff

Personally I'd stay away from springs because it infers someone didn't know what they were doing. I'd certainly be knocking money off.
All these cars at this age are going to have dodgy brake lines unless they've been done. I guess some sort of showroom for 20 years might prevent that.
Diesel FIP is likely to be tired between 120k - 140k and need replacing. Main issue is chain-stretch but the hotfix works really well. New chains and sprockets were about £350 when I priced it up but probably closer to £500 by now.
Transfer box could do with refurbing at 150k as the Morse chain gets slack and the viscous coupling starts to get stiff.
Radius arm bushes and in fact most of the rubbers will also be perishing if not done. I would be looking for one with rubber not polybush replacement.
Other than the EAS niggles (and Kurt can help there) the diesel is pretty bullet-proof.

Has self righting stability control.
Anti drip and anti leak ability.
Premium bowl shape. Went on to influence cups and many thing a like, pans included....

Still looking and I've seen a clean dhse not a dse, on eBay and it has 18" alloys, does the 'h' mean it's 18" as standard or are they all 16" and it's a mod? Also some arfur Daley ads I've seen say it's got a part wood steering wheel ( they look nice) as it's a dhse but other dhse's I've looked at just have a plain steering wheel. Bit of a minefield this. Some also say extended leather dash? And door cards? Is the dashboard and doorcard trim leather on all models or just the 'h' ones?

The dhse came out when they did the model update 98/99 and the door cards went to having leather handles and insert panel,along with 5 bar panel seats
the wood/ leather steering wheel was an optional extra on all models that did not have it as standard
early base models had 16" wheels all others had 18" but again you could probably order what ever you wanted from the factory, that`s were the autobiography part comes in
the extended leather dash is probably the clove box lid and the one under the steering wheel and some had leather center console side cheeks and then there`s the leather or wood cubby box lid gear lever, hand brake handle, wood rear ashtray the goes on, you payed your moneys and could have anything

As said above the customer basically got what they wanted. Mines a Dhse on 16" wheels with trim inside as per my example

Floss don’t be led astray by the H. It’s a DSE with cupholders. Normal DSEs were kitted out with different options, if it’s the one you want fair enough but don’t pay extra for the H. Silly bits like wooden ashtrays are astronomically priced to buy afterwards but not essential.
The 18s are up to personal preference. It will run fine on them albeit bit bumpier. If it’s on 22s walk away

I like my 16s. I have been looking at a set of 18s with tyres today. I like them because they are cheap but the 18s is putting me off
