Hi all,

Just got hold of a Series III LWB FFR 24v rag top.

Number of questions.
Should I leave it 24v and as original as poss?
How easy is it to convert to 12v and should I. Are there any benefits to changing?
What's the little black box on top of the engine. I know it's called a filter unit but what's it for?
Anything else I should know about these military vehicles i.e. websites, owners clubs etc.

Ta
Steve

yer black box thing is probably the balast resister which drops yer voltage back down to 12v. but to be honest its folking years since i played with em so ave forgot most of it.

Ok I think!
Does anyone know about converting to 12v?.
I assume it's just the electrics that are very different.
Looking at the size of the alternator(it's huuuuge!) I might just weigh that in and retire on the proceeds.
Will take some pics tomorrow and post.
Anybody got more info about these beasts I'd be most grateful.
Or if some body wants to bell me and fill me in re the service and maintenance?
Anyway it needs a new clutch plate cos the crank oil seal died. That'll keep me going for a while.
Nearly got the SWB 21/4 petrol back together after crank oil seal and clutch( bleedin things!). So assume it's the same drill. The military is a five bearing engine(I'm told). No different? Let me know.
Thanks chaps

Civi spec?
12v alternator, wire batteries for 12v, bulbs.
What else do I have to do. Bit worried about the strange boxes full of electric bits and what they do.
Nobody got one who's done it?
Let me know

Thanks

yer lights and lighting wiring and stuff should be the same ( cept fer bulbs)
yer need to swap yer dizzy and coil aswell.
if yer gees a few daze i'll see what i can remember about em but its bin folking years since ave seen one.

Hi

You can follow the links below for some 24V FFR wiring diagrams.

The little black box on the engine contains a resistor which drops the voltage from 24V to 12 V for the igniaiton system.

I like the 24V system. It is more superior than the 12V system. BUT, spare parts such as alternators, dizzy, atarters etc are getting harder to find.

I will probably be forced into going 12V in due course.
