Hi all!

I am not at all experienced on engine oils and I am admittedly a bit of a sucker for branding and things that are expensive because they make me feel like I'm getting better quality, but I know from experience that it's not always a case of pay more get better.

I was wondering if anyone here might be able to give an idea of the difference between a £30 5 Litre oil and a £60 one.

I want to take care of my disco and get as many miles out of her, but I don't want to throw money away either.

eurocarparts.com have a 40% sale going at the moment and I want to take advantage.

Any advice thoroughly appreciated!

Cheers

It would be difficult to pass judgement on any oil without reading it's specs but changing the oil frequently is probably more important than buying the dearest and leaving it in the engine too long.

Which engine is it? Which oils are you looking at? 20W50 mineral oil is somewhat different price to 0W30 fully synthetic and both have different applications

For what it's worth.... For the last few years I've used Fuchs Titan GT1 5W-30 on @sierrafery 's recommendation. It's made to a VW spec to suit engines with in-head injectors, I think it's not very conductive and so doesn't mess with the electrical connections to the injectors. It's usually about £24 for 5ltrs from Opie Oils (if bought from their eBay store).
But as Col says, frequent changes are the most important thing. I do mine every 6k, and get a full OEM filter set from Island for another £24. So the whole thing costs just under £75 plus my time, and there's oil left over to go towards the next one.

On a TD5, none. Just buy any oil that meets or exceeds LR oil specifications.
Any modern oil will be far superior to whatever LR specifications said 20 years ago. ;)

I use Comma, Fuches or even supermarket brands, whatever is cheapest at the time. I never spend more than £25 for 5L of fully synthetic oil.

Get the ACEA spec required, then look at ebay Mannol oils and buy 20 litres at a time, ignore make/fancy packaging it is all about the ACEA number.

This is what my D3 and wifes Audi runs on, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5w-30-Fu...333419?hash=item216bbaedab:g:ZGYAAOSwHwldpglK

Tbh it is to good for the D3 and almost certainly to good for the D2, I use it as I then only need one type of oil, but at 2.50 a litre who cares, as for paying twice that a litre!

Nice find - do you actually get what's in the picture, i.e. VW 505.01 spec, as it's on the label but not in their description?

I lied I have the Mannol 7715 which is VW 504/507, which I gather is better than the VW 505, even weirder I appear to have the best part of 50 litres!

With the Mannol products it is their 4 digit part number that you need for searchs etc, in this case 7715, https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=mannol+7715+20l&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_sop=15

This is like a different language to me!
I have had a look in the manual and 5W40 will work fine.
I was more concerned about brand and lines.

Brand name means nothing, the ACEA number is like an approval system, so if oil company joe bloggs oil is to a certain ACEA number but cheaper than another companies also to the smae ACEA number then why would anyone buy the more expensive one if it does exactly the same job?

Google ACEA numbers and have a read, boring but interesting at the same time.

I find 5/40 oil takes at least an extra 1 to 2 seconds to achieve oil pressure over 5/30.

But I have run truck engine in in motorbikes for years with no issues, in fact I have run the wrong oil in many things as it was free!

So find a 5/40 you are happy with and go for it, but do read the label and see what you could buy the same spec oil for off of ebay.

Thanks so much!
It's very reassuring to get this kind of feedback.
Much appreciated
