Freelander Rat problem

Am I the only one that has a permanent rat trap wired to my engine? I live in the country and have had a series of rats crapping on top of my engine oil refill cover. My trap works fine but I have to stop every now and again because I have forgotten to check before setting out and a barbecued rat begins stinking the car out as it cooks while dead in the trap! Do other Freelander owners have any similar problems. I had one under the seat but managed to shoot the lttle beggar .
 
Got back to the car to find this fella ripping the spare cover to bits once...

Put a cat in the Freelander for a day keeping eye on it just in case it starts to rip at items, you can also buy those ultrasonic units what only animals can hear, they are supposed to work.
 
We live in a rural location, surrounded by farm land. Its not uncommon to find that mice or rats have been in or around our vehicles. We've had wiring chewed, and snacks left the cars eaten by Roland rat, or Mickey mouse.
We have to make sure that anything that can attract little critters isn't left in the cars.

Yep, sadly I have bait stations every 10 feet. Fen traps out and game cameras. Cleared all harbourage, bought an air rifle, cleared out the lofts of old insulation’s, fitted rodent wire to cavities, air bricks, voids roof eaves. So far I have a lid on this but it only takes one bastid to get back in and the headache reoccurs. Fortunately I trapped a significant amount of females last harvest otherwise I’d be buying a Patterdale. Next step is a feral cat :D

I recon they are about the best method of vermin control.

A perfect day for a cat in summer is just waiting, waiting for any sign of movement, then killing what ever moved - slowly.

The killing is 1 thing, the knowledge there is cat waiting to kill them is also a big factor in them moving somewhere else.

Unfortunately, what moves is usually not vermin :(

Yep Patterdales are great or any ratting terrier that hasn't had it's natural instincts bred out of it (I have talked to many a border terrier owner whos pets show no interest in vermin, sad really as they can still be great pets, whilst waiting for my Patterdale to come out of some hole or digging something out of it's burrow) but just be warned they will stop at nothing to get to a rat in or underneath a car. My neighbours L200 pick up had a rat on top of the gearbox & my hound ripped the speedo cable off it & tugged a section of wiring loom from it's clamps trying to get to it:oops:, I did offer him the £40 for the cable but just ended up fitting for him!:) So traps or poison for minimal damage. I think rats can breed after 6 weeks & are a bloody menace.
